i've been doing a lot of searching over the past few days and have found very little on this subject. only thing i did find was LEDMeter (a project started right here on the hardocp forum).
my goal is to be able to string up a few (maybe 10 or so) LEDs to serve as a CPU Usage meter. i'm especially looking for new ways to do this, ie using some form of connection other than parallel port, possibility of a low level os independent way of driving the meter etc.
so any links, info, etc you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Well, you could hook those LEDs up to a circuit that measures Amperes, and measure the utputs of the Board Fets, thus having a CPU+GPU+RAM+extension card usagfe meter...

Youc could probably use a serial or usb port using a PIC microcontroller. You'd have to write your own software though.
