Hi all. I've been having probs with system process running at 50-99% all the time. About an hour ago I reinstalled xp home. And I am currently typing with no updates or reinstalled software. Before all this happened, I moved everything from my old dell dimension 8200 case to a new kingwin case. I didn't change anything except the new case came with three fans. 2 in front and 1 in back. I've hooked the front ones to the psu and they have their own controller. The back one is hooked up to the MB. I've tried unhooking and rehooking them after rebooting computer with no changing results. Double checked everything and can't see anything I may have missed. Hopefully the MB or processor is not going out. Just can't figure out why system process in task manager shows it constantly running and it is hard to do anything because of lag.

I read in another place just the other day about a guy having this same issue, he finally found his RAM wasn't completely locked down & his serial ATA cable seemed a bit loose, sounded awful strange that it would even post but he said after tightening those up everything was fine. Since you did just move this to a new case wouldn't hurt to double check all your connections, I have seen stranger stuff ;)

Also may want to scan for viruses, trojans, and/or spyware.

Or it could be a Windows service that is hanging. Check the Services and see if anything is saying Starting as status but never actually reaching Started. You could look in the Task Manager to see what processes are eating your CPU usage as well.

thats kinda funny this comes up. my old dell use to do that, i was noob status with computers so i thought it was totally fine. later i found out that i had alot of processes running, id say like 45, give or take a few. now i dont let my system processes go above 14. unless its needed then i let it run. but i dont think thats the same problem with you. best bet is to do what, whats his face said and look at the services in task manager. clean them up in services.msc if need be

Before I reinstalled today, I ran more scanners from various vendors than I can count on my hands. After I reinstalled, processes were about 16 or so when i first started this post. In the past, after a reinstall, it was never a prob. I did do a quick format when I reinstalled today. Does that wipe everything off the drive? When I look in TM, services runs at about 50-99% with the one having the most usage.

Yes, there was a good article on viperslair.com I remember reading that tells all about the services that XP installs and which ones you need and don't need and can potentially turn off.

So does TM say services.exe is eating up your CPU? If so it sounds like a service is hanging. Check the Admin Tools->Services to see which one(s) is/are trying to start.

Looking at the services list, I don't see any stuck in the starting mode, I don't think. I'll take a look at viperslair.com. And system is eating me up!

If the process in question is called 'system idle process' you have nothing to worry about. This actually shows the amount of CPU time NOT being used and it is functioning normally if it's showing 95-99% when at idle.

I didn't even think about that, yeah, you may want to check this as this is completely normal. You could even go to the Performance tab to see what the true CPU usage is.

1. get your ad aware spy ware removal, this is enough, no need for any other spyware programs. UPDATE it.

2. get hijackthis and learn how to use this tool, very powerful and handy

3. restart goto safe mode

4. run highjackthis

5. run ad aware and remove everything

6. reboot

7. http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp (web based virus scanner. )

8. Never use Internet Explorer agian, try Maxthon, Firefox or Modzilla

This should get everything if you have a virus/trojan

Process that is using the most is "System". It's not system idle process or services.exe. I'm looking at the download the_bomb suggested at the moment. ;)

did you try the above post on how to remove virus / trojan

can you give me a screen shot of ur proccess?

I'd love to give a screenie, but have forgotten how. Let me know. I have noticed now that when I first start up, everything is normal for quite some time. Then i go play a game, sof2 is one I play, it starts almost immediately. When I play, there are no artifacts or anything, just lag. Like every 1-2 seconds it will hesitate.
Also, MaMMa, in my first post I mentioned that right after I did a reinstall that it began to happen. I'm not sure how I could of gotten a virus if I only visited this site and a couple of other forums for help. Is it possible to not have wiped out everything during the quick format process?

Hit PrtScrn (if a normal keyboard, should be to upper right of backspace / above the Delete/Home/PgUp/PgDown cluster), then go to Paint (or run-> "mspaint"), and paste.

Can't seem to get print screen to work or I'm not doing it right. All I do is hit print screen button and then what is supposed to happen?

when you hit "printScreen" nothing happens. After you hit print screen, open up Microsoft Paint and use the "edit/paste" option. It will then allow you to paste the screenshot into Paint. Once that is done, you can save the file like you normally would.

Just last week, I had this happen to two of my client's computers. One of them was a Windows Update that was hanging in the background; the other was an uninstall of Office 2003 that was hanging in the background.

Do your Windows Updates & see if that helps clear anything up. Also, go to the Task Manager and start shutting down processes and look to see if your CPU useage lowers and take note on which process caused it to reduce.

Ok now I feel like noobjuice. I looked in faq to paste an image, it said to click on browse. Not seeing it. I quess I'm just getting frustrated.

I haven't installed the microcsoft office 2001 yet. I'll look into the update.

I was doing a little Googling and some people mentioned that some Windows updates caused this.

I had a problem like this when I was workin as a techbitch at a local mom and pop...

After some serious hair pulling out, it turned out that there were quite a few documents that were queued up to print but there was no printer installed any more. I deleted all the docs in the print queue and the puter worked great.

As he mentioned, he hasn't done any windows updates, so they are unlikely to be the root of his problems.

When looking through the list, there isn't a process called "svhost" is there? There should be several "svchost" processes, but not "svhost". If you have "svhost" then you're computer is infested with a virus. I'd grab zonealarm to see what's trying to access the 'net, and stop anything that look suspicious. Past that, I'd grab a decent virus scanner and spyware removal tool, and see if those fix your problem. Failing that, you can either spend more time trying to figure out what's wrong, or just reinstall. If you do reinstall, unplug your net connection, and do your updates via CD before you bother connecting to the net...an unprotected XP boxen is incredibly quick to be infected, and without service packs you're almost guarenteed to get some kind of a virus within a couple minutes of being connected to the 'net.

No, I don't see any svhost there. Been running process explorer found a couple of things. Under System Idle Process there's Hardware Interrupt, DCPs and System. With most usage going to DCPs and System. When I go into properties for System, I find 2 threads that are pretty active. 1: ACPI.sys+0x10b10 5 or 6 times more active than 2: ntoskml.exe!ExQueueWorkItem+0x2f. Been looking around the web for info on these clues, if they are.

It could be a bad driver/ corrupt driver causing the high cpu usage. I had it happen with a old Linksys ethernet card when the drivers got corrupted.

Well, I just wanted to update and say thanks for all the input and taking your time to help me. I fixed it by going into bios for the millionth time and looking under event log for the first time since I've owned this thing. It said "cpu overtemp". I'm sure I failed to give you guys details on my switching everything over from old case to new case. Dell put an ugly green thingy over the cpu hs. I left it off thinking that with 2 fans in front and one in back would be enough to keep it cool. Not the case I guess. I've jury rigged it up for now until I figure out how I'm going to place it permanently. Again I'm sorry if I wasted your time. I gotta say I learned alot from this.

See now this is just something to keep in mind if we ever see someone else have this problem.

Yes, important lesson here: Dell case design > random Asian case design.
Dell uses one fan for CPU and case together, most other cases require at least a heatsink+fan on the CPU, in addition to the case fan.
I wonder why the hell you'd want to move stuff OUT of a Dell case anyway, since it's hard to do better.
