Hi,

Have I just underclocked my CPU by mistake? 2.53GHz..

Have a P6t mobo and i7920, followed OC guides with:

19x multiplier
DRAM Freq 1600MHz
CPU Voltage 1.35
CPU PLL Voltage 1.36
QPI/DRAM Core Voltage 1.35
DRAM Bus Voltage 1.66

Boot failed at 20x multiplier so lowered to 19x, then Win7 says 2.53GHz.. WTFrog?

Hmm but CPUz says 3.7GHz one second then 2.5GHz the next.. it bouncing continuously... Whats going on?

seems like some kind of power saving scheme might be turned on and is throttling the CPU down to save power/reduce heat. I'm not familiar with Intel's chips but I know when I was overclocking my Opteron, the power scheme was called "CoolnQuiet" and it's recommended to shut it off if overclocking. (edit - forgot to mention it will be in the BIOS)

Ok, that was it. Got 3.8GHz constant, Prime95 ran for about 2 secs before BSOD, rebooted, ran OCCT v3.1.0 for about 1 minute and 4 secs (first 1 minute was idle test, then 4 secs under load) then BSOD.

Back to BIOS, reduced BCLK to 180 with 19x multiplier to get 3.61GHz, OCCT 15 mins complete without errors but with CPU fan (coolermaster V8) running at full noise.. temps got to a max of 78 degrees..

a) Is this temp too hot under load?..

b) What are my options to reducing my temps on air?

no those temps arent hot at all for that processor.. ya might want to look in the bios and see if there are any manual settings for the fans.. like changing the fan speeds depending on the temps..

also its a good idea to leave EIST on since your processor will run cooler at idle.. and make sure if you are changing the multiplier lower then the stock multiplier that you dont have the boost option enabled where it will change the multiplier higher when under full load.. if its on that could be why it was BSOD'ing at 3.8ghz.. or your cpu voltage isnt high enough..

CPU voltage at 1.35v, I thought that would be plenty..

Can change cpu fan (coolermaster v8) manually to one speed or another via a dial on the back of the pc but doesn't have an option to raise or lower fan speed automatically from idle to load..

Are there voltages that I can lower that would bring the temps down a little? As I understand it, more voltage = more heat.. correct?

Just leave it enabled - it saves power & has nil effect on OC.

These threads are coming on every week now....
