CPU temps high all around, concerned...

So, getting concerned with my CPU temps. I was consistently idling at 65*C, full load was scratching 80-90*C..... yes very high. . . i know. Since I've been running the rig for almost 2 years I figured it was time to reseat the heatsink. Snagged one of those fancy AS5 cleaning kits and new tube of AS5. Cleaned, tinted, applied, slapped on cooler.

Temp only dropped 5-7*C, now idling 57-60*C. Hmph. Airflow in case is pretty good. Have 2 120mm intakes in front, 2x80mm exhausts in top and one directly behind CPU cooler.

Other idling temps in case are HD's 30*C, GPU 40*C, Mobo sensors range between 40-45*C. Room temp is probably ~23*C. CPU voltage is @ 1.25v in bios.....but for some reason cpu-z shows 1.216.

Kind of clueless. I'm guessing it could be my heatsink. It's recycled from my previous core2duo build, bought the 1366 mount kit upon this build. It should still be much cooler than this considering. I just can't believe I'm running this hot, it should still be much better than a stock cooler......

I'll have to reset back to stock CPU clocks just to see how it effects the temp but I did it just the other day and I want to say it only lowered idle temps by about 5-10.

Any insight on my problem?
 
Hi skoad. Those temps are indeed uncomfortably high, especially for that voltage (cpu-z showing a lower voltage is normal). My recent experience dealing with temps for better folding may be helpful.

I reapplied thermal paste yesterday and saw a remarkable decrease in temps, indicating my previous application was flawed. I was running about 75 C load with 1.25 v and now it's at 55 C load with the same voltage.

What I did differently was apply more thermal paste. I read how one should only use a bit, and probably overdid it. Taking it apart I noticed some parts had very little or no paste. This time I used maybe 0.3-0.5 mL, the size of a small button.

Not sure if this applies to you, but hope it helps. You could also try to adjust the fans and their directions.

Edit: Load temps were under LinX on default settings. I have a SFF case with an overclocked 6950 in it also on full load, so I'm thinking your temps are probably not too related to your case and case fans.

The reality is if you have good non-conductive TIM there is no way you can use too much (You can however as said use too little). Check this video out for the pea sized drop being the best application method: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EyXLu1Ms-q4&feature=fvw

If you have temp issues application can be the issue sometime either bad contact, pressure, or spread. Take it apart and see if its either of the 3 r some combination.
 
Yes you can most certainly have too much paste. A very light coating is what you want, the pea/uncooked grain of rice is the ideal amount.
 
I totally disagree with you and so do TIM manufacturers. I spoke with the owner of Innovation Cooling (The manufacturers of ICD) on this exact topic. All excess squeezes out/off. Extra TIM is not going to stay between the heat sink and CPU if tightened properly period.
