CPU Temperature Sensor broken?

I decided to fire up speed fan in my HTPC and see how the temps were and it said that the CPU temp was 66C (idle). It's a socket 754 athlon xp 2000+

To confirm this, I downloaded the gigabyte utility to make sure and it reported the same thing (so did the BIOS).

The computer has been running fine for a year, and I didnt notice anything till now. I opened up the heat sink and there the thermal grease was all over processor (and not the little spot in the middle). I cleaned it up the best I could, reapplied some paste and the temps still are high (idle 65, full load 85).

I'm thinking the temp sensor is broken, but looking for any feedback.
 
socket 754 cpus were either athlon 64's or semprons. socket A (462) was the only socket with athlon xp's


anyways, is the hsf hot to the touch? tap it, dont press your finger on it just incase it is. also, with a temp utility open, press down on the hsf a bit to see if temps go down. that would tell you if the hsf has enough pressure.
 
I'm not sure if I do have the similar problem with my Asus Maximus Formula..

I noticed CPU idle at 50c during idle and load at 54c ...

my previous Asus Commando showed result between 38c to 46c for same processor E6600 non OC ..

the worst part my Northbridge also high at 48c to 50c from idle to load.

I've changed thermal paste of the Northbridge and another CPU cooler .. but result's still about the same with 2 degrees of drop in overall. (AC Freezer 7 Pro to Noctua NH-C12P)...
 
I had to RMA a DFI board a few weeks ago which had bad temp sensors.
HS was cool to the touch but the sensors reported temps high enough to shut it dowm. Tried 3 different heatsinks and 4 TIM's including the stock Intel hs and TIM...got some minor improvements but the reported temps were just wrong. DFI was very easy to work with and the rep told me I nailed the diagnosis correctly.
It was a new board so the RMA was fairly painless.
 
for an athlon xp 2000+ 65c at idle it's not a good temperature, the normal is 55c or even 45c with better cooling.

But if you're talking about a 754 one, 65 is completely excesive, the normal temperature is 30c idle and 45 full, then if you touch and is not hot, definitely the sensors are broken.

I think I am having the same issue. I kept thinking it was the heatsink, but perhaps not.

Who did you call to get support? PH# ?

Were your PWM and NB temps also high?

I've got a DFI LP JR-P45 board, and an e8400 cpu.

Outside the case, open air, with Scythe Mini Ninja on it, I'm showing 50c idle, and 65c load. What's really wierd, is a fan doesn't seem to matter at all on the HSF.

Reading temps using Coretemp and Realtemp, both show consistant readings, but very high. It's my understanding these temps are from the CPU itself though, not the motherboard.

Anyone have any ideas? Ambient is 25c, all settings stock, btw
 
Yeah having a similar issue here, with a Xigmatek HDT S1283 and an Athlon X2 5000+ BE, ambient is 24C.

At default clocks, showing 40C idle and 50C load, which is what I'd expect out of the stock cooler, not the S1283. Tried reseating it 3 times (used ArctiClean and OCZ Freezer) to no avail. At 3.0GHz, I get similar idle temps (40-43C) but load temps shoot up to 61C. Heatsink isn't even warm to touch, which is the most bizarre thing of all.

For me...it was a motherboard issue.
As I said, DFI was pretty easy to work with. If I remember correctly, I filled out a support ticket/email at their website and they actually called me back ...fairly quickly, like two hours later(during normal business hours, not a holiday). The replacement board works great and temps are fine even OC'ed from 2.4 Ghz to 3.3 w/Q6600 and an Asus V-60 HSF and 8GB of mem and Vista Ultimate 64 bit.

Your temps do not look good for an e8400.
I have lower temps on my OC'ed Q6600 systems with mediocre air cooling.
 
I had to replace my intel DH67CF because intel put up a bad build of BIOS upgrade. I just got the replacement motherboard, but it reports cpu temperature as 0 both in BIOS and using Intel Desktop Utilities. I think it's a broken sensor on the motherboard. No wonder the replacement board had some sticky stuff on the bottom, and there was some re-soldering marks on it. I only got to use a brand new board for one week, now it's replaced with junk. Need to contact intel again.
