I don't understand this amd overdrive says the cpu temp is 45c but all the cores read almost 49c. The asus software also says 45c. Why is it 45c when all the cores are at 49c?
There are different sensors, the main cpu temp that asus and amd are reading is further away from the cores and reporting a general all around cpu temperature.
If overclocking you want to pay attention to core temps.
If you put your finger right beside a flame of a lighter, and then right in the flame, one position is going to be much hotter. The same concept applies to CPU's. The "CPU" sensor is underneath or very close to the socket.. the "Core X" sensors are actually inside the CPU cores.
Even the core temps aren't exactly right, but I would always err on the side of caution. The DTS reporting the temperature has a fair amount of error margin.
If it was the average then it would be 48.925 C. As others in this thread have said, the DTS (digital thermal sensor) is on the die and the motherboard sensor is physically further away from the heat source. A few watts will be dissipated between those two locations so the temperature rise will be less significant at the motherboard sensor.
