cpu temp computer frezing

ok my friend here is having some problems with his computer. whenever he turns on his computer, his cpu tempature goes really high and i mean like around 80*C. when he boots up into windows 5mins later his computer frezes. i told him that it frezes because the intel p4 chips and a thing that prevents the cpu from burning. he thinks that a virus has caused this to happen. i told him that a virus can not make your cpu temp go that high unless it is using 100% cpu resources. so what do you think is wrong with his crappy computer. btw he has the stock hsf on his chip. and he has not even touched it. and also when he touchs the heatsink it is not hott. what the hell is wrong????
 
The heatsink sounds like it is very poorly installed. It's probably turned the wrong way I would guess. That causes issues while just barely keeping the CPU from melting generally.


And 80C isn't just severely hot, it's dangerously close to melting your CPU hot. Be careful. It may already be damaged if it gets so hot. As for a virus, even if it uses 100% cpu power for days straight it shouldn't make it get any hotter than a reasonable temperature if you've set things up right. The idea is to get things cooled exactly right so that the CPU under full load is just cool enough to remain stable. Also, about the protection thing, that's not supposed to make it freeze. Intels are supposed to automatically underclock if they hit 50C to try to keep themselves below 50C (and they can get to some very darned low frequencies from what I hear.) If it freezes, it's just plain instability.
 
the computer is like 1 year old. the computer didnt have any temp problems untill yesterday when he turned on his computer and then it froze and then when he restarted and went to the bios and checked the temp and temp was 80C. it cant be the heatsink because it was working perfect for 1 hour.
 
You are 100% certain it wasn't 80F? I'm still surprised it will even get that far at 80C. It should be so unstable you can't even get to the bios...

Anyway, ok, one thing I wonder. Was the hsf attached with a thermal pad rather than thermal paste? Those things will totally melt if they get too hot. This happened with my video card when I overclocked it just a little bit, and it took me forever to figure out why I couldn't get it to run any semblance of stability even when I put it back at stock speeds. Perhaps if the room got too hot, the CPU would get too hot and melt the thermal pad. Also, I've heard thermal grease can kind of loose it's edge over long enough time, though I wouldn't have thought one year would be enough or that it would make such a gigantic difference...

I still suspect the HSF is loose or something though. Maybe it was bumped, I don't know. 80C is NOT a normal temperature... Heck, a stock AMD heatsink (which is more often than not, not enough to run the thing with any stability if you don't live in the arctic) will never come close to such a temperature. I suppose massive CPU throttling could cause it to freeze though. If it's so high, it will keep going down so fast that it might just screw up everything I suppose. I'm not sure though. My experience with intel's is mainly limited to my dad's computer and my grandmothers, and her's never hits 50C even though she keeps it in a poorly aired case locked up inside a cabinet. I've never felt such a hot PC, yet when I check the realtime CPU clock, it's never going below the 2.4GHz it's supposed to be...
 
well amds fry at 70c right? intels are a lil better but still i dont think its could have gotten to 80c thats really really hot
 
Precicely. The system should be randomly rebooting, the bios will look all garbled, and etc if it were truly at 80C. I think that I read AMD Athlons fry at 90C, but I'm not sure. Regardless, you don't want to go over 55C because at that point you start to significantly reduce the life of the thing to a noticable degree. However, if it ever did go so high and somehow didn't melt, there WOULD be damage to the CPU almost for certain. They are not made to go that high, hence the reason those p4s underclock the moment they hit 50C.
