cpu suggestion for folding rig

I have a Gigabyte P31-ES3G mobo (socket 775), MSI 8800GTS and an antec 500W powersupply that I want to run as a naked folding rig (so I heat up my basement). Maybe Win7 maybe linux.

Any suggestions for a reasonably-priced Core 2 Quad CPU to stuff the board with for the SMP client? Or should I just stick with a Core 2 Duo?

I want to put this spare equipment to use for the [H]orde but don't want to break the bank either. :D

Check the FS forum for deals. Otherwise do what I did and just buy a $50 E1500 from Newegg. I put it in an old 775 MB I had laying around and it's running a 8800GTS. Haven't installed the smp client yet.

You should be able to grab a Q6600 used for a good price on the forum.

If you want a e2140 for cheap send me a PM ;)

2140 is a good CPU for running GPU's, but if you want a VM capable CPU, you'll have to look for something like an e66 or higher

I'll see what I got LOL

Or he could just run a native Linux installation (what I do with my E2140).

Hell, for a rig running just GPUs there is nothing wrong with a P4, I'm using 1 still LOL

Ive got a socket A chip I could use for a GPU folder... but I bet someone here is still using like a P2 or sumtin

reminds me of that thread where that guy wanted to fold on his Dreamcast because he had linux on it

yall remember that one?

Thanks for all the replies.

Budget-wise $150'ish. I'm going to run the GPU client on this as well as SMP.

In comparison, I have a simlar rig at work running GPU with a MSI8800 GTS (4-5kPPD) and SMP with a Wolfdale 8400 duo (1500-2000 PPD).

The goal is get better PPD on the SMP side of folding compared to the Wolfdale setup above.

A used Q6600 should be under your budget, OC well and will give you 5k or so even when running NV GPUs.

The 6600 sounds good Kendrak. Looking at my stats, I started getting concerned when my projected rank indicated 250 days to advance 2 positions within the [H].

Time to ramp it up. Damn you 404 and Kanakis!!! Slow down! :D

I've got hardware inbound just to try and keep me in the top 20.

Bunch of you new guys upped the stakes, and now I've got way too many people on my threat list.

Im still trying to be on your threat list, but your a slippery bugger! :)

My boss informed me that I will be needing to shut off folding.... not in trouble or anything, but I need to shut off my folding rigs there....

So Im gonna be with a x4 AMD, and 2 9600 GSO's to try and keep on your heals for now till I can afford my next upgrade....... 10 years from now.

im 6k over you right now, should level off at 20 once the stats catch up :)

I thought I was headed for the top 30, now I'm in the climbing lane with my hazards flashing about about 8 people on my threat radar. Dag nab it!

Wave and honk [politely] when you pass the Otter :D

Let us know once you've gotten the quad in!
