pop it in your comp and put it under full load for about 5 or 10 minutes, then pull it out and pop it off

how, pray, do you expect to do that? Jam it in while the lever is down?
Depending on the thermal compound you COULD "pry" it off gently, or slide it off. If it's really stuck on there the hair dryer will have to do, just watch out for static electricity.

... he could put the processor - with attached heatsink - into a computer. then, he could turn 'on' the computer and run it under full load for a few minutes. this would warm up the processor, the heatsink, and the thermal compound (don't forget to attach a fan of course)...
then, he could turn 'off' the computer, and remove the fan, the heatsink, and finally, 'lift' the lever, and pull out the processor.
seems pretty simple to me...
