cpu stuck at 100% when 3dmark trying to launch

i recently found out my 3dmark 05/06 could not launch properly. the Appz would stuck at the splash screen for eternity, and when i brought up the task manager, i saw one of my 2 cores was at 100% load and the other one was just running other regular background threads.

does anyone experience this before? it used to run fine, this only happened to me after i swapped my x1900xt with the new HD4850. I've reinstalled both 3dmarks but it didnt help, i am running outta ideas :(

isnt the fix only for vantage? is there a fix for 05/06 as well? i have 3dmark06 v1.1.0 and 3dmark05 v1.3.0, they are the latest versions i could find.
 
Check to make sure your hdd isn't running in PIO mode.

You can look at this in the device manager.

If it is, remove the hdd as well as the hdd controller in device manager and reboot.

Also, when was the last time you defragged your hdd?

What apps are running in the background?

How many processes are running?

How big is your swap file usage?

How much free RAM do you have when you look in task manager?
 
With newer ati cards, you are promted to download a fix in order to make 3dmark detect your hardware config properly. You can download it here.
