CPU self overclocking under load?

This is my first core processor.

I have a e2140 on a P35 DS3L Motherboard.


When I check CPU-Z at idle it is running 200MHz * 6 = 1200MHz. Which I understand is speedstep turning down the multiplier when idle. It is setup to run a default 200MHz*8 = 1.6GHz.

Now when I run Orthos, it immediately jumps to * 8 as expected. Now the strange part, the bus jumps up to 228MHz (still *8), putting the processor at 1.8GHz. Strange?
 
Yeah its a feature in bios, it's either called eist or speedstep, it basically just flops the multiplier around when the cpu isn't being stressed or is stressed, I started using it to save electricity.
EDIT: OK so I actually just read your post, you're going to have to turn it off or it'll keep doing it no matter what the fsb is at.

I think there was some lame turbo feature activated. Off now. No more FSB changes.

Running at 266*8 now. With stock cooler, speed control disabled. I tried 300x8 but it wouldn' start. :-(

Core temps really jumping around 52-57 C in a second while running Orthos.
 
Ouch, I was able to hit 300+ on my e2140 easily...333x8 on stock volts (CPU - forget where my ancillary board volts were) ) if I recall. Currently @ 368x8 @ 1.355. Of course I'm not running a GB board (the abit in sig), and am on water - I was in too much of a hurry to futz around w/ the stock cooler when I got my new parts ;).

You might want to try a tiny bump in vCore and you might be able to get over the 300 hump (still @ 1.325v/stock or no?)... Temps are getting up there, but I think you could get away w/ a small bump and not get into a dangerous temp zone. Also have you try bumping the MCH voltage, or anything else? Maybe it's the board in need of some more power, and not the CPU's fault directly.

[edit] Come to think of it, how are the board/MOSFET/etc temps doing, and how's the case cooling? Perhaps you don't have enough airflow and that's causing the issues?
 
Following the recommendations in that good OClock thread Abu posted. I am now running with 1.35 volts bios. Testing 2.4GHz right now (8*300).

Case cooling is ok. I have an Antec solo with two 92mm intakes and 120mm exhaust, I don't have speedfan installed yet for mb/case temps though.

I am limited by the crappy stock intel cooler. The one on the 2140 is pretty bad. All aluminum design. I think this might be as high as I go as it is 62C at 15 minutes into Orthos now.


2.4GHz is fine for a while. I plan on getting a nice quad Penryn when they are cheap. I am stepping up from a Barton XP 2500, so this is a BIG improvement. :)
