CPU runs at 26C. Should I overclock?

After running Sisoft Sandra, I've noticed that my Pentium 3 750 MHrz Coppermine CPU is running at 26 degrees Celsius while idling. I am guessing I have some over-clocking capabilities there!...

The thing is though, most people's CPUs run at around 50C! Mine is nowhere near that! Is this unhealthy to run so cool?

Well what are you using to find out the temperatures?.. BIOS? or a sensor?

According to SiSoft Sandra, a tempurature sensor. I just ran another test. 27C for CPU, and 23C for mainboard.

I don't know if that program is highly accurate.. It might be but I would try a Sensor

What's room temp (in C)? Chances are the sensor(s) are incorrect.

the question is never "should i overclock?" but always "how far can it go before my cpu forms a singularity from using too much energy?"

I don't have a thermometer in my room, but I knwos its pretty cold. I live in the basement. :)

Yeah, so do I. I say pump that thing to its max. Just make sure that you go slow and test along the way, just so you can see when enough is enough.....especially if your temp reading aren't going to be ENTIRELY accurate.

Eww, wouldn't that be a little "sharp"? ;)

37C? The proc deffo isnt at 26C

Unless its 37F in which case damn, your room is cold :D

Please take that outta yur sig, or atleast my last name... Might be a little embarrassing if someone saw that (especially my parents).

By the way, its MY CPU that runs at 26C.

Yeah you think after being here so long he would learn the respect of asking you first...sheesh...lol j/j corny ;)

I'll take out the name, but how often are your parents on the [H]ardforums???

Go go speedracer

Yeeah, now we're talkin'.....nothing like vintage cartoons to put a guy back "in the mood". ;)

Thanks. Well, maybe my dad would cruise the forums to learn about overclocking??? lol. I just like to make sure I'm safe.

r u serios? u canot be serios

haha, I dunno, all of it, jsut bein' stupid.... but if those are the temps I'd give it a shot

uh, yours is also a tenth of the speed of others :D

you might be able to get it to 900 but probabily not any higher. PIII's were never huge OCers, no fixed PCI/AGP, intel northbridges werent meant to go over 133 really

what the hell are your parents doing reading the [H]? and are you the only person in the world with your name? come on.

If mine was a tenth of the speed of others, "others" would have a 7.5 GHrz machine.

If my mobo doesn't have fixed PCI and AGP bus though, might not be that safe to overclock. I am upgrading to an Athlon XP 2600+ (Barton core  ) soon though. A lot of people say overclocking the Athlon XPs gives you a lot of extra performance because of the Instructions per Cycle thing, but I know exactly what my parents will say to overlocking it: "You'v got the fastest computer in the house, running at TWO THOUSAND MEGAHERTZ and you want to overclock it?!" Lol, they wouldn't even bother mentioning the extra cache and higher IPC, but thats their loss.

look at performance, 750 PIII doesnt even get 1000 in Sandra I believe, while the standard is around 10k

Thats a performance rating, not a speed calculation. You can calculate speed in mhz.

So If you want to use something like that instead of straight mhz then choose a calculation. Like calculating pi to the 10 millionth digit. that will give you a time, which you can turn into a rate thus getting speed :)

when someone says something is faster than something else, usually they mean in terms of performance, after all the intel-amd-ipc stuff.

I mean performance guys. But, a P3 gets 1000 in what? The standard what, is 10,000? What is this that yur talking about? THe Index value or something?

But thats not really the performance of the cpu itself, thats the performance of that pacticular multi-media application. In order for the proccessor to take advantage of its instruction sets a program has to be written for it thus becoming more prog optimizations than anything else. Applications that dont have that code written in them fall back to just straight mhz of the proc...although I can't think of any right now which is why your point is valid also.

The point in all this?... I don't know

SiSoft Sandra, measures the performance of processors. Those numbers were bad memory, I just benchmarked my system at 2.5 ghz, slow for my kind of proc, and I got 9418 MIPS, 3919 MFLOPS. Your processor (they included it as one of the comparitive systems), gets 2025 MIPS, 1005 MFLOPS. So not quite 10x the performance but quite a large increase, and since a 750 PIII 100 mhz bus (7.5x100) can get around $60, I'd say UPGRADE :D
