yes, but P4s stomp Athlons when folding QMDs
each have their strengths and weaknesses. QMDs can be memory hogs. Tinkers are light on the memory. Athlons do slightly better on gromacs too. so for folding on an athlon set it up normal with bigunits if you have the memory. for P4s, get a grunch of memory and you can destroy anything by setting both big units and the -advmethods flag. the rig in my signature is pulling down 600 points per day.

As everyone has already said, each CPU has its advantages and disadvantages, but at least in the current, the P4 holds a slight advantage as in the proper configuration, QMD's are almost a constant stream of points.
Unfortunately, I've not seen alot of Tinkers here lately, it seems a great deal of focus has been shifted to the Gromacs and DBGromacs cores which run about equally across architecture.
You really can't go wrong either way, it just boils down to a matter of personal preference and how you'd like to interpret the price/performance ratio.

Remember that most of the comparisons are in terms of GHz. I have two nearly-equal Intel and AMD machines--a 1.4GHz Pentium-M and a 1.53GHz AthlonXP (1800+). The AthlonXP takes about 7 minutes per frame on Tinkers, the Pentium-M takes about 10 minutes. On the 600-pointers, the Pentium-M takes 42 minutes per frame, and the AthlonXP takes just over an hour per frame.
My AthlonXP gets about 150ppd on the 600-pointers and the Tinkers, and about 75ppd on other stuff. The Pentium-M gets over 200ppd on the 600-pointers, about 100ppd on the Tinkers, and around 75ppd on other, non-bonus stuff.
Like p[H]antom said, it comes down to personal preference and your perception of cost vs. performance. I would recommend AMD right now, since their processors are better for gaming and most other things, and tend to run cooler than their Intel counterparts.

That would only slow down writes and reads slightly, but should help.

Right now mine is sitting at 67.0 MB (70,307,922 bytes). I think they might balloon up also in the beginning.
