My brother has a Core i7 920 that seems to be over heating. Just sitting idle the system is reaching 105 F. I removed his heat sink, blew it out, reapplyed thermal paste (arctic silver 5) but it still appears to be staying at 105 idle. Under load its been around 115.

He doesn't overclock, using stock heatsink and we reset BIOS to defaults just in case something was changed Any other ideas to try?
 
Well, I guess that temp isn't bad after reading Intel's site but I recalled having about 80 on load when I had a 920.
 
Start worrying when it gets up to 80C (176F)... Without overclocks, it should probably never reach those temps...

Anything over 70C or so will probably shorten the lifespan of the CPU, but you aren't even anywhere near that... 46 or 47C is a good temp.
 
lol... 105f is absolutely nothing. a few degrees warmer than your body is not overheating.
 
70C won't even remotely effect the lifespan of the cpu.. you would have to run 90C+ 24/7 before it even comes close to shortening the lifespan of the processor. and even then it would only take a year or two off it which most processors life span is about 10 years.

btw op'er tell your brother to use Celsius. thats probably why you are thinking its way to high since you probably were reading the temps on your 920 as Celsius instead of Fahrenheit which is throwing it off.
