So going to a Lian-Li v1000, my thermaltake big typhoon no longer fits, so I replaced the stock heat sink. I figured that would be fine for a while and if necessary I could fine a replacement later. Anyway, its idling around 57C and even watching TV in MCE pushes it to 87C pretty quickly (asus pc probe). With the typhoon i got ~37C idling and ~45C when compressing to divx (full load). Old case did have a duct going straight from outside to the top of the fan on the typhoon though. I cleaned both the HSF and the processor and applied a new thin layer of artic silver and I'm 99% sure I mounted it right, its not that hard and Ive done it before. The thing is that the heat sink doesnt even feel warm to the touch. Any suggestions on what could be going wrong or should I just look for a new heat sink and if so can anyone make a reccomendation for one that would fit in the v1000 on a asus p5ad2 mobo?

could I test this by say holding the HSF or can I just reclip it or do I have to redo the thermal paste all over again?

ya fans are pretty gay these days, seems like you have to use a whole shit load of force to get it right.

so it runs cool now?

problem solved, just had to use enough force that i thought id break the cpu

Omg, that's the worst feeling I've now encountered twice.

When I built this comp it took me about 20mins to get frustrated enough that if I snaped the CPU I wouldn't care :D Well it went on but then I got a ninja, the angles where like half and inch space and I thought I would mess it up because I was to cocky thinking I know it will work, but willl it? Was what I thought lol Well it worked and I hate doing that lol :p

hahahah.. oh man, I hate those tight fitting CPU fan coolers. I had this P4 setup at work with a junk cooling fan on it, and it had the clip that you had to remove with a screwdriver. I was sitting there playing with it for like 15 minutes and it wouldn't come off by hand.. then I came back with the screw driver. I was pushing down and out to try to get the fan clip to come off, and the screwdriver slipped and punched a hole right thru the motherboard. :p Then I just made up some excuse that the computer didn't work because the motherboard went bad due to a voltage fluctuation problem.. LOL.

yup, not as cool as with the old HSF but I moved to the new case so I can hold more HDDs so that I can leave movies uncompressed rather than compressing to Divx. You'd be suprised how much room 220 uncompressed full length movies takes up :)

yup, not as cool as with the old HSF but I moved to the new case so I can hold more HDDs so that I can leave movies uncompressed rather than compressing to Divx. Its an HTPC/file server so its idle most of the time. You'd be suprised how much room 220 uncompressed full length movies takes up :)
