I am out of ideas so I thought I would throw this out there to all of you. A computer that I have is running at Athlon XP 3200+ Barton processor with an ASUS A7V600 board (i think). Recently it started shutting itself off within 10 minutes of running and then telling me to check the bios for power problems. Turns out the CPU temp is at 200 degrees Farenheit!! The heatsink burns reeeeeal bad if you touch it and the fan is still spinnin at full speed. Everything seems to be working fine though.

Any ideas? Thanks a ton guys/gals.

I'm assuming you've gotten any dust out of the case and out of the HSF assembly.

perhaps a new application of thermal compound is needed?

How long has it been working with this heatsink before the problem started? What kind of heatsink is it?

It has been running for about a year and half with no problems. It uses the standard heatsink/fan that comes with and AMD.

Sounds like it could use a good dusting. Get a can of air and clean out the heatsink and case. Dust and heat are the major killers of electronics, and in a case, dust can be the cause of an increase in temps because it will block the air flow.

Also, the dust (if any) may be slowing the fan down. Or possibly the fan is just dying. If dusting doesn't help I would buy a new fan or heatsink.
