heya, just posting to get some insight into new cpu/motherboards. Ive have been running a shuttle case for a while, and heat finaly got to it  so its time to build a new comp. I was wondering if anyone has any good suggestions on a new CPU/Motherboard combo, ive been out of the loop for a while on all the new cpu specs, so just wanted some insight. My price range is around 2-250 dollars, and would like something AMD. Also prefer a MB from asus, but any others will work with good reveiws. Thanks guys

he he, sorry i should calrify, i meant 2-250 dollars on the processor itself

I was looking at Maybe getting this Clawhammer as a Processor, anyone know of any others around the same price that might be a better match, im looking to build a hardcore gaming machine, is this easy to overclock?

ah, 250 for just the cpu.

well first, you have s754 vs s939. as you might be able to tell, i'm the president of the s754 club, thus pretty biased towards s754..

however... to a newcomer to the a64, it's rather complex to overclock, due to it's curious naming scheme and the move of the memory controller to the cpu die.
check the stickies in this forum for a somewhat indepth oc'ing guide geared towards beginners to the a64, it should help ;)

next.. if you want to overclock, there's no denying the awesomeness of the revE cpu's. most of them hit 2.6-2.8ghz easily, while barely putting out any heat.
but on the flip side of the coin, a 3400+ mobile or 3700+ clawhammer will do the same, just run a bit hotter, and with 1mb of cache (unless you plan to get a san diego 3700+, which is still a tad more costly than the faster clocked s754 3700+ clawhammer)
one solution is to get a newark. revE goodness for cheap on the s754 side of things. i have one that maxed out at 2.85ghz with 1.57v on air.
if you go s754:

s939 (sadly the 1mb 3700+ is a tad out of the range at $330)

but, the cpu aside, almost any a64 will work.. as the video card is definitly one of the most important things in a gaming rig (i'll touch on that in a moment)... that and a good amount of ram. 1gb is starting to be phased out with the realization that it's pointless to get expensive ram with an a64. you can get 2gb of ram for just over $200 that will be an awesome match for an a64.

for the video card.. basically get the best card your budget will allow. i'd say a 6800gt or x800xl for the optimal setup. you may want to consider waiting a while for the next gen nvidia and ati cards (former should be out first though)

he he he yah, i was already planing on getting at 6800, and was trying to find 2 gigs of ram that wanst like 300 dollars, lol

he he he, thanks. ok one more question, what are the differences between cores, from what i can find out the San Diego is the higher end of the a64 without getting into the FX series. then comes Venice, Newcastle, Winchester and the Claw/hammer seriers. From what you said aboce is the Venice/Newcastle the newversion of the A64, so they run cooler or what? he he he, thanks for the help i really appriciate it, Aslo id just like to know what you think the best mid ranged processor would be for the money, i really dont want to spend to much for a processor. But i dont want to have to upgrade in 6 months either, thanks

San Diego and Venice are both revE cores, which means 90nm, sse3 and a "better" memory controller. heat output is pretty low, and they overclock quite well

the FX-55 has been switched over to San Diego, and the 57 should be out soon, in SD form only :D

Ah ok, that helps clear it up alot, he he he. hmm, maybe i will look into finding the funs to get a lower priced SD then. thanks. If you got any more suggestions, feel free to share ;) thanks. i apperciate it alot
