My CPU is very hot, 60 after prime95 for 1 hour

its a P4 2.5 @ 2.8, using stock fan

what can i do to reduce the heat? what's a really good fan for my CPU? and where to get it? its socket 478. Thank you

Depends on how much you want to spend. Either a Zalman 7000 or a Thermalright SP-94.

That is a bit hot. I found my machine rebooting myself, and when windows loaded, up popped a 'thermal warning' box. I was running my poor chip at 76c. :( This room was about 99f, and my case temp was up in the low 50's c. I opened the window and the doors, and within 2 minutes, the room cooled off to a nice 50 f. CPU is back down to 47c load... That was a bit close. Someone is buying me a new chip, as well, because I told them if they closed the door that would happen.

As for your chip, I'd suggest an SLK 800 or SLK 900 series cooler. Personally, I'd pickup one of the P4 versions of the SLK 900 series. :)

Well, you are using the stock cooler, which could certainly be improved. Thermalright makes the best heatsinks money can buy. Plus you can put a quiet 92mm (panaflo rocks) fan on them. But what are your case temps? If your case is hot, the best heatsink in the world won't do as much for you as getting some air flowing in there.

find a way to reduce ur case temp and go and buy the Zalman 7000-AlCu
its the best performance to noise level ratio HSF out right now

46*C is a temp I'd want my CPU to be at after a lot of Priming, not my case. Work out your airflow in your case (more fans maybe, wire management) and I bet you won't even need to buy an expensive heatsink. I'm not saying you shouldn't buy one, as they are really worth your money, but if you do choose do buy an SLK or Zalman etc. a high case temperature like yours will negate most of the improvements you would gain. Keep in mind, the heatsink and fan can only cool as well as the air around it is cooled.

cut more holes for fans if you need to, 2 in front, 2 in back (if possible) 1-2 on side, and 1 blowhole (usually 120mm)

should have good airflow then (btw, air enters from side/front, leaves back/top)

I agree with ’m‚³‚ñ. 60 is a little hot for only an hour of Prime95. Now as for fan's I would go with what MontyAC said, either a Zalman 7000 or a Thermalright SP-94. Zalman is a great company as well as Thermalright. But if I had to choose between the two I would go with the Zalman 7000 instead of the Thermalright SP-94. That’s just my personal preference. :)
