CPU hotter after upgrading CPU fan?

Hey all,

I have an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ cpu on an MSI MS-7325 mobo. I'm NOT overclocking. It's summer, my computer is running extra hot, and I pretty much use my computer as my sole entertainment system. Before upgrading my CPU fan, my average temperature (from CoreTemp) with the stock fan would be about 55-60C. After upgrading to the Thermaltake Ruby Orb CL-P0391 fan, my temperature is about 67-70C. I double-checked my application of the thermal past and it should be fine. I'm using the thermal paste that came in the fan's box, NOT Arctic Silver 5. I just ordered some of that online and should get it soon. Any suggestions otherwise?

Here are my system specs:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Windsor (2.61GHz)
MSI MS-7325 mobo
8GB DDR2 PC2-6400 RAM
ATI Radeon HD 3870 GPU
550watt PSU

I would also like to upgrade my CPU itself eventually, so I could really use any suggestions on cooling. =)

There are a bunch of things to consider, but take into account that many TIM's take around 200 hours of use to settle in. Still, those temps don't seem right.
 
my guess is that you did not get the heatsink seated correctly or you used WAY too much TIM
 
The other problem may be that the cooler you bought isn't as efficient as the stock one. The AMD heatpipe coolers were very good and I think my upgrade path was to a Zalman CNPS9500...

As others have mentioned, check and make sure it is mounted properly and use just enough thermal paste to form a very thin layer between the heatsink and cpu.. Most advise a pea-sized drop in the center of the CPU after you have cleaned all of the old stuff off..

Every review I found of that cooler said it performed horribly...

I'd recommend this cooler for you. It's cheap, quiet, and has amazing performance for the money. It comes with great thermal paste pre-applied. The mounting can be tricky but if you are careful it should go smoothly..

Hmm yeah I don't get how changing a fan results in higher temps unless the flow rate/db is that much worse. Is your setup now quieter? Also reducing temps in general is either increased size/CFM (and sometimes noise) or reducing ambient temp (i.e. move down a floor).

I think the OP meant CPU heatsink..
 
The problem is Thermaltake. That company has (for the most part) never offered anything more than mediocre in terms of performance for the dollar. There are much better CPU coolers than that Thermaltake for the price of that cooler.
 
I used Arctic Silver 5 this time and it made no difference. I think the heatsink just sucks.

Yikes! A pea sized amount would make a huge mess! I think you meant the size of a small grain of rice. Spread it out with a piece of plastic wrap on your finger tip and to be safe add one more tiny tiny bit to the middle. Use a coffee filter and 90%+ alchol to clean the heatsink and processor beforehand if needed.
 
It is the Orb heatsink you are using. It is a sad excuse for a cooler.

ALWAYS look at reviews for coolers before you buy one.
 
I have gone through three different HSF on an Intel CPU and believe it or not, the stock Intel HSF was the best and the quietest.
 
You bought what amounts to a crap cooler :( there really is no reason for that particular model(or anything similar) to still be on the market.

Sounds hard to believe unless we are talking about idle temps or the 980X.

The stock heatsink on socket 775 and 1366 are minimal at best. I remember that my Q9550 idled at 55C and full load at 75C with the stock cooler at stock frequency and 1.05V idle. Replacing that with an AC freezer pro and my idle and full load temps both went down by around 20C. And the idle fan runs at ~900 RPM which was much slower than the stock cooler.

You're doing it all wrong. The stock Intel HSF is fine for default settings. That's all it's good for.
 
Well it was one of the early C2D when Intel had the bigger heatsinks. Anyway, I can't be certain that the Intel heatsink was the best but I broke one of the prongs when I took it off so I am unable to put the heatsink back on. The next two were $20 or so from newegg, nothing fancy. I was able to get ~150MHz higher with the original stock HSF but since I took it off, I have never been able to hit those speeds.

calling MAJOR bs here. intel HSF sucks. i swapped mine out on my 920 and temps dropped by 15c idle and lots more load. i put a true spirit on there. works well, and not half as loud as the intel with the fans im using.

im only at 3.2ghz and 1.20v

The ~$20 heatsinks are NOT going to get you any cooler temps over the stock Intel unit... unless it is a $35-$40 unit that is on a good sale.

And unless it is a heatpipe unit, then it is not even worth buying.

I don't remember exactly what was available during the early c2d days, but I do know that the Thermaltake Silent Tower was one of the better ones that was out during the Athlon XP days... in fact, my brother-in-law is using my old one on his e5200 setup and it is overclocked to a nice 3.5Ghz.

I spent around $50 on that cooler back in the day. Better performing ones can now be had for $30-$35.
