CPU Grease

I just got some thermal grease from newegg in the little injector bottle.

I am getting ready to switch my CPU into a new MB. I want to separate the CPU and heatsink. How do I wipe off the CPU without damaging it? I want to do this right.

Is it best to keep the stock Intel P4 grease already on there or should I scrape it off and new stuff on there?

Also, when I inject the new grease onto the CPU, how much do I use? I know it's very little, but how much is best?

Rubbing Alcohol Isopropyl 91%

Use this and you will have no probs. Make sure the rubbing alcohol content is 91% or higher. This will take off the grease and cause no damage to chip. When applying the "grease" on to the cpu, just coat it so it leaves a layer that covers the whole thing. You will not need much, just enough as if its a layer of skin. Check out the instructions on how to lay compound on CPU,
here. This gives you a visual aid as well.

Also try using Arctic Silver the best for CPU compounds.

Good luck

i think u can use nailpolish remover to remove the old grease from both the fan and the cpu. You use a pee sized drop on both the cpu and the fan. spread it evenly with a plastic glove over the cpu so it stays flat and even (no bumps) on the fan u need to spread it in circles or flat again around where the core is gonna be placed. u can use the grease they have on there but it does help if you use the compound.

This is how.

Rubbing Alcohol Isopropyl 91% and qtips should be fine. I have never had a problem with a tshirt and rubbing alcohol either.

From the Arctic Silver site:

Removal Instructions (From Hardware)
1. Arctic Silver thermal compound can easily be removed from hardware using the proper cleaners and tools. For general clean-up, a cloth or paper towel will work well. Intricate cleaning can be accomplished with Q-tip swabs. An old toothbrush can often get the compound out of crevices that other tools cannot reach.
The recommended cleaners are:

Use high-purity isopropyl alcohol or acetone and a bit of careful rubbing. Do not use nail polish remover as it contains fragrance oils and other contaminants.
(If you use acetone, do a final cleaning with isopropyl alcohol.)
