CPU/GPU Correlation: How Does This Work?

Alright, any chance to learn something, I'm up for it, so here's one for the gurus, unless it's just a really bizarre "glitch".

I'm having the same problem with Left 4 Dead as some others, with stuttering, looping and crashing. Like others I've seen, I've gotten a message (though usually have to look in my Events log after I've crashed) that my GPU driver got stuck in a loop.

However, here's the kicker... it's actually not my GPU or driver, it's the CPU. After entering a certain command line in the in-game browser which "sets the core affinity to one core", according to Steam's forums, bingo... no more stuttering, no more crashing.

So, how exactly does that work?
What is the correlation between CPUs/GPUs that this could actually happen?

Is Valve's coding just so buggy right now, that's it's problem with multicore CPUs somehow messes with the GPU drivers? Obviously, it's something with the game, because my rig is fine, as with others who've had this same problem and the same resolution to the problem.

While this is irritating at best, I'm curious to know how this could even occur, because even if the game coding isn't friendly with multicores, causing a video driver to loop, cause stuttering and crashing due to a game issue with CPUs, just seems bizarre.

Again, I'm just curious as to learn something new here, because I've never seen this happen and enjoy learning the technical end of things since I've been building rigs for many years.

I just cant figure it out... incompatibility with multicore CPUs causing what really amounts to a "false" error (meaning it is causing the looping to happen, but not actually due to an out-of-date driver etc.), prevented completely by setting the "core affinity" (and it really doesn't actually make the game run off one core, that I can tell)... where's the relation?

Thanks in advance to anyone willing/able to take the time to teach me something (if there's something to learn here), unless of course, Valve just screwed up so bad that even the errors people are getting from L4D don't make sense, lol ;)
