CPU goes bad after a year use

my XP2200+ was not the best overclocker but was sufficient maxed out around 2.3@1.85v stable and I usually run it at 2.1@1.75. It has been good until today when i turn my computer on after school. I was greeted with a "can't detect ide error" so i unplugged and replugged ide cables and it booted fine into windows.
I came how from work to find another problem. My computer was lagging so badly that the mouse stopped working every 3 seconds. So i restarted and the computer froze on the info screen, can;t even get into bios. Cleared BIOS and underclocked my CPU back to stock and it worked fine. My question is, is this normal, after a year of OC the cpu just goes crap and doesn't OC?? Is this CPU busted?? I tried to OC to around 2ghz(10x200) no luck blank screen no boot.

BTW: i dont have my watercooling on, im using my slk800A and a SF2

Raising voltages does limit the lifetime of any processor. Even if you don't run higher voltage all the time it probably did help slowly kill the overclocking capability on your chip.

Losing an overclock is nothing new, in fact it happens all the time. Some chips just cant handle the stress, and not all chips are created equal. Some people are blessed with wonderful luck and a good chip, and some people just get stuck with a less than average performer. I don't think the chip is busted, but it may be on its last legs if you keep trying to overclock it anymore.

damn it! i was gonna install my watercooling back on and OC like crazy guess that won't happen now :(

Have you run Prime95 at the stock speeds to see if your processor really is stable and functional anymore? I would suggest that to see if your processor is actually b0rked, or just limited.

If you pass the Prime95 torture test, try bumbing up the FSB by one (1) mhz at a time and see if you can boot. You may not get back to 2.3, but at least its a start.

Good luck, and hey, even if your processor is fried, you can always get a 2400 mobile and overclock the hell out of that :D

This smells more like a BIOS or mainboard problem to me. In my experience, CPU's are much more reliable than a mainboard.

I'd look at just about everything else before CPU, personally. ;)

how do i check if it's a mobo problem, i really don't wanna buy anything but if my mobo crapped out wut cheap mobo do u recommend, i was lookig at the NF7 non s for a replacement

agreed :D

Well i thought i fixed all my problems by underclocking to stock but now when i leave my computer on, after i exit the screensaver, the CPU usage would jump from 0 - 100% in 2 or 3 second intervals causing everything to become jerky. I can't even move the mouse withouht it freezing a couple of times on the screen anyone else have this problem???
I ahve to restart everytime the system goes like this and when i restart it hangs on the boot screen trying to detect IDE drives, can't even get to bios at this point, i have to turn on and off a couple of times to get to boot back up again.

Now it does sound like a Motherboard problem...

Is there any way to take your processor out and swap in another one? Possibly a friends? Try your processor in a friends mobo if you can. See what works and what doesnt.

nope all my comp literate friends run p4 and I'm the only one with AMD so i guess ill be ordering a new mobo from newegg

wut u guys think of my choices??
NF7-S
AN7
DFI Ultra Infinity NFII
8RDA3+

The problem might be that that your power supply is getting weaker.......or less stable.

i'm having to make the same decision right now. tried to turn on my comp, POST reporter on my asus board says it has a memory error. try memory in my brother's p4, works. really well, in fact (runs at pc4000 speeds no problem as opposed to pc3200 at stock)

i'm looking mainly at the infinity, butt i may have to look at the 8rda3+ as well. how's that board?

I would seriously get the Infinity, I own one. It makes it into windows at 255 FSB, but due to my RAM holding me back I can't get it stable until I do a voltmod. But the board wants to do it, its a fantastic board.
