CPU fsb question(s)...

Hi, i have a e8500 on an asus p5q pro. I do not plan to overclock it, right now I am running or at least am trying to run at its rated speed. A few questions:

1.I just mainly want to know how I can check whether or not if i have a fsb of 1333mhz? It seems its running at 3.16ghz, so thats good.

2. When I enabled intel speedstep technology, the cpu ran at 3.17ghz when the cpu usage was 0%, i know this by clicking ctrl alt del to check usage, and right clicked "my computer" in windows to properties to check the cpu speed, as per intel website instructions. I thought speedstep technology brought down the clock speed when its wasn't required to reduce heat and power usage? Then i disabled speedstep, and it was running at the same speed as before. Anyone what might be the problem? would u recommend speedstep tech.

3. should i disable intel c-state, it was originally disabled. IDk what its for

CPUZ when in windows for details

intel cpus are quad pumped so the FSB will be 333 x 4 = 1333

speedstep is useful to save power when not doing anything heacy, upto you to leave it on.

it should work, did you change any other bios settings... make sure when you change it to enable you exit the bios but you SAVE and exit.

No, all wrong, DL CPU-Z or the like and you will see what its running at idle, looking in the "properties" it's going to tell you what the CPU will run with the set multi and FSB not with speedstep, as it's not an active view of your system.

As you can see it's 3.0GHz in windows as I am running a 300FSB and a 10x multi, but CPU-Z is showing the current speed and multi with speedstep working, 1.8GHz and a 6x multi.

yea, i did save the setting in the bios. And the cpu speed continued to stay the same when cpu usage was 0-1%. I enabled speedstep and it was still 3.17ghz. Really strange...

thanks for the clear up, but its kinda strange why intel's website provided this method for checking the difference is clock speed when using speedstep. Just one question: under the cpu-z stats, is the rated fsb, also the current operating fsb?

Yes. The rated FSB is the quad-pumped value for the bus speed, and it's displayed in real time along with all of CPU-Z's other readings (which is one of the reasons why it's such a good tool to monitor your CPU speed).

Yes, in CPU-Z your actual (non-pumped number) is the "Bus speed" wile the "Rated FSB" is your FSB after quad pumping, as in my case 300 x 4 = 1200. Just remember, in BIOS when you set it, its going to show the non-pumped number, also speedstep does not change the FSB once you set it, it only changes the multiplier.
