CPU for Multimedia Professional?

I am in the Multimedia design field and can't decide on what non-Mac CPU manufacturer to go for. I will be using video editing programs, graphic design and layout appz, 3D Studio Max, etc.. I will also be doing some encoding. However, I also like playing games, but that's not as important as getting my work done.

What CPU handles media production best, and why? Please don't let your loyalty to a particular brand affect your answer ;) .
 
I'd say Intel. From my personal experience, my old desktop rig was a 1.67GHz Athlon XP with 768MB RAM, and then my laptop is an Intel 2.4GHz with 256MB RAM. I went to Ireland in July with some family and I compiled all of the pictures we took. I worked on making a video slideshow with them with Windows Movie Maker 2.

After I added maybe fifty pictures to the timeline, as well as some mp3 audio, the program basically crashed.

I tried the same project on my laptop, and it chugged. It would lock up for like ten minutes between actions, but the program never crashed. I'd recommend having around 2GB of RAM.
 
Single processor? Dual processor? Or maybe you could define a budget.
 
It seems as though most of the high end graphics and multimedia packages have built in optimizations for Pentium 4.
