CPU Fan won't Spin

I just updated my system and turned it on... It booted to windows no problem and ran for a minute but then I looked at the CPU fan and realized IT WASNT SPINNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I immediatly shut it off and freaked the hell out. I then turned it on again and the fan tried to turn on for a second but instantly stopped... I then tested it without the 12v 4pin to mobo and fan spun perfectly.. I am hella confuzed really need help!!!

power to the cpu fan coulda gone PFFFT... that's my thoughts.

If I'm wrong, throw it in a pool. that'll fix everything :p
 
Well... I turned it on now.. and it doesnt shut off/on but the fan wont spin right when it starts up. It posts and then the fan kicks on and boots up. What setting should I have the fan setup as instead of the AUTO it comes with normally.
 
The fan is set to auto speed control. It will only spin when the cpu is getting warmer, and it will slow down when it gets cooler. Sounds normal.
 
my ds3 acts the same way. both cpu and system fans won't start when you turn on the computer until a second later when you hear a beep, then fans run.

I set the bios to alarm if cpu/system fans failed, the alarm always went off because both fans did not run right away during boot up. I think this should be a bios defect. I had to disable alarm due to this issue.

my first DS3 board system fan did not even run sometime until it got into window. I thought it is normal due to low temp at boot up but it happened randomly. Sometime it barely moved at boot up then stop. minutes later it ran. it seemed the voltage is too low for the fan (40mm). until one day, the system fan did not run at all. I had to returned it for another ds3 board.

the old board seemed to control the system fan speed according to the temp. but the new board runs the sys fan at full speed all the time, regardless of the temp. both boards controlled the cpu fan just fine.

anyone understand how the system fan work with the ds3 board?
 
If it is set to auto speed control, I would think there is a setting to change the threshold. I am not sure, I have four different options for speed control on my DQ6. I just have it disabled anyway.
 
I spent all of last night installing windows and re-installing windows... It was running but windows would lock up on me constantly as I would try to install drivers and whatnot... Now it turns on/off/on shows the XP loading screen but then I hear my WD RAPTOR click and the screen goes blank. It then goes to the pre-post and will do it again and again. I am really getting frustrated as I type this on my moms PC I am re-formating the drive for the 4th time already...
 
Creapiest thing I saw was a Core Duo on a MATX board. Its CPU fan kept shutting off for a couple minutes then back to a slow rotation. Nothing wrong with the board, just not much heat put off. Cool! :D
 
No. My WD Raptor is NOT the problem.. It's been working fine with my other system and I just had the system running fine... Until now after installing SP2 my PC seems to THINK I set a password (when there really isnt one and only one user) and wont let me get past the USER LOGON screen *(can't move mouse pointer or type keys)*
 
Can you try a hard drive other than the Raptor? Just to be sure... You've had alot more patience than I would've had. If I would've had to install windows four times I think I would pull my hair out, but I would probably do an RMA long before then.
