CPU Fan Error

I recently completed my first build using a Corsair Obsidian 650D case, Asus P8Z77-V motherboard, and Noctua NH-D14 CPU cooler. When I installed the CPU cooler I hooked it up to the case's fan controller instead of the motherboard. Everything works fine but when I first started it up it gave me a "CPU Fan Error!" message. I did a little research and just went to the BIOS and set it to boot through error messages. Now everything starts up and works just fine. I'm assuming the computer just doesn't know that there's a CPU fan there.

Everything ok with how I did it or is there a different approach I should take?
 
BIOSes by default panic when they don't see something pluggen into the CPU-fan header. It is the manufacturer's way of gaurding customer's from their own foolishness and melting a CPU that isn't cooled.
 
I had this same issue with an ASUS mobo using a CoolerMaster aftermarket heatsink. What was happening was the CPU fan was spinning at min speed (~590-600RPM) and the mobo bottom limit was set at 600 so sometimes it would sense the fan at 595 or so and call it an error. I just set the error threshold to 500 and away we go :)

Edit: I'm dumb and didn't see that you didn't hook the fan to the CPU header. Like the guy above me said, that is your issue :p
 
You don't need to set it to boot through error msgs, just go into the hardware settings, where it shows temps and fan RPM speeds, find the one for the CPU header and set it to "ignore", or whatever setting it has like that, it will no longer check for the fan and will no longer throw the error at boot.

Another way to do it is to take a "small" screwdriver & release the lock tab on the back of the fan's yellow wire clip & slide it out of the connector. Then slide the wire & connector out of the black fan sleeving. Now plug that yellow wire into a spare fan connector in the proper place. Now plug that connector with the yellow wire into the mobo cpu plug. Now you can manually adjust fan speeds with your fan controller & the mobo will not only think the cpu fan is plugged in, it will also tell you the cpu fan speed. The yellow wire is the speed signal wire. I do it all the time it works fine, I also did it to both my D14 fans, I put one on the mobo cpu plug & one on the mobo aux cpu plug. Have fun :D
