I feel kinda silly for asking, but I just noticed that the fan in the Thermaltake Volcano7(on comp #2 of mine) is blowing DOWN onto the heatsink(and assumedly out the sides). Correct me if I'm wrong, but would'nt it cool better sucking the heat up-and away? Its easy to change, just a few screws.

EDIT: Thermaltake finally answered my e-mail to then on this question....its an official " for the volcano 7 - blow down onto the heatsink".;)

im pretty sure that should be right as you want to blow cool air over the heatsink fins thereby pulling the heat off them and away.

So, the fan should be blowing UP into the case not down on the CPU? I've got the 7+ also and was recently wondering the same thing.

Well, HE'S sayin DOWN onto the cpu is right, but the fan on my comp#1 is blowing UP away from the cpu. I need more input to see whats best.

depends on the HSF, some should blow towards CPU, some away. i remember the volcano7 blows down, much liek the jet airplane 9 .... i mean .... volcano 9 :D :(

I have a volcano 11, and when the fan speed is low to middle, the fan goes one way. if you turn it up more than half, the fan spins the other way. I thought I was crazy when saw it...

I've tried both ways on my SLK-800 and blowing onto it was cooler by 1 degree F. Some are specifically designed for it to blow a certain way, but I think on most it will not make a huge difference.

I'll second MadJuggla9 on this. It depends on the design of the heatsink. Try both and see which works best. If your fan is mounted directly to the heatsink without any spacing you will probably get alot of noise when you suck.

I hear lots of ppl talking about volcano 9
what is it anyways? is it some cooling system? or just a fan?

its supposed to blow in, most do that

someone once said "you blow into your soup to cool it down right?"

Right. You don't blow away from a bowl of soup to cool it.

Volcano(Jet engine) 9

there it is, the reason its called a jet because it has a hairdryer2...errrrr.....smartfan2 on it

blows an incredible amount of air though(71CFM at max)but at the loss of 3/4 to all of your hearing

everyone knows this: faster air movement means more cooling. so do the test below to understand why you want the fan blowing DOWN ONTO your heatsink.

unscrew a case fan and hold it in your hand while its on. put your other hand in front about two inches away and feel the air blowing. you do feel it right?

now put your hand two inches behind it and try to feel any air being sucked in. you dont. its because until the air is drawn into the blades of the fan, its moving very slowly.

get it?

afaik the only type of sink that you want the fan sucking air through is one of those very short, low profile ones. it would be easier to explain with a picure.
