Hello everyone,

I've got a quick question for all of you. While gaming, my CPU seems to get to temps of up to 206 degrees Fahrenheit. During idling or when I'm not gaming, it's around 110-120F.

As soon as I close a game, the temps drop very quickly. I'm not sure if it's my current stock cpu cooler/heatsink or my videocard that's doing this.

I installed two extra top case exhaust fans earlier today to see if it'd help, but it didn't do a darn thing.

What I need to know is if it's an issue with my CPU cooler/heatsink or my videocard.

I have a Zalman Z11 case (not the Plus version).

It's got 6 fans in it.

If you need more information, feel free to ask.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Only way to find out is by reapplying the TIM. Try it and tell us if it helps.

I'm assuming TIM is Thermal Paste? If so, I have reapplied it, and it didn't help.

I only thought it was the video card because when gaming, the temps get higher, but immediately after closing a game, the temp drops.

206*f = almost 97*c. i think the real question is, is why isn't your motherboard a, throttling once it gets too warm, b, not going into thermal protect mode, and shutting off, and b, are you sure it's not a malfunctioning sensor? at idle, that's stil 43*c. what's your ambient temperatures, and what's your case flow layout?

Let me give you more info on my PC. The motherboard is an ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3. Processor is an Intel Core i7-2600 (NOT k).

Case flow layout is as follows.

Pretty sure the fan in the bottom front is exhaust. Fans on the side of the case are also exhaust (one on each). Two at the top are exhaust. One in the back that is also exhaust.

Ambient temp lately has been 90F... don't ask. A fan seemed to have made the temp higher than normal. Strange.

I forgot to mention that if I alt-tab a game that I am playing, the temperatures drop quite a lot. Bringing the game back up just brings the temperature back up again.

What this guy said. I have my doubt that temperature is accurate.

Actually, the one at the bottom front should be an intake, not an exhaust: If you have both front and rear fans as exhaust, you would have ended up with the front and rear fans cancelling out one another, which would have resulted in zero front-to-rear airflow.

Sounds like the CPU heatsink is not seated all the way.. are all the clips actually locking?

That being said, the stock Intel heatsinks are trash.

Yeah, big question is still with the CPU heatsink for me. Some people have issues with getting the stock heatsink seated all of the way. Probably much better going with some other cooling mechanism.

Are you using the stock heatsink? Like these other guys said, doesn't sound like it's seated correctly. Getting those pins in correctly is a pain sometimes.

I'd clean the fans and the heatsink with some compressed air.... that lowered my CPU temp by few degrees :) And other guys are right - i put my front fans on intake, and rear ones on exhale.

Also, you could see if the airvents from computer arent blocked by desk or machine isn't too close from wall.

If you run stock cooler on intel CPU change it to something like Megahalem, Noctua, TRUE, you will really see and feel the difference.

Thanks guys. Yes, I've had issues seating the heatsink. I'm pretty sure it's seated correctly and locked in place. I could be wrong though because I thought the same thing recently until it started moving around when I barely touched it.

I was recommended the ZALMAN CNPS9900MAX by a Zalman employee for use with my Zalman Z11 case. Looks like I'll have to buy it.

I appreciate the help.

Take a look at Noctua coolers as well. I wouldn't settle for that Zalman if you're OCing, do your research there might be a better value for your money.

Since you're not over locking, you don't need to go all out for a top end hsf...but you do need to get the stock heat sink mounted properly. If it moves when you barely touch it, it is not clipped on properly.

It's hard to get this thing mounted correctly. It's a pain. Before I even touched it recently, the temps were just fine until they suddenly sky rocketed recently, which is why I HAD to reapply thermal paste, and in doing so, I had to unmount it, yet the temps are still high.

Also, I can feel the hot air blowing out of the top and back fans.. I didn't think a cpu could produce that much heat, or hot air in general.

I'm still a noob when it comes to custom building, obviously. Should I stick with the stock heatsink and attempt to get it mounted in properly, or just go ahead and get a new heatsink/cooler? I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Go ahead and get a better cooler if you want...but even in the mean time, if you get that stupid push-pin cooler (and yes the hold-down design is stupid, and a pain to get right) you'll get much more acceptable temps.

An i7-2600 is rated at about 95W TDP. That means that according to the design specification, at stock settings that CPU is designed to need to sink a maximum of 95W of heat off. You try to force 95W through nothing more than a 1" square CPU lid, and that critter will get hot.

Alright thanks Skripka. I'm gonna go ahead and just force those pins down a little later, hoping I don't break anything. Lol. If I still have issues, I'll just go ahead and buy a new cooler.

Alright some good news, for now. I took the stock heatsink off, remounted it, put more thermal paste on it as well. I cleaned my video card. It was pretty dusty and nasty.

Temps have only reached 186. I'm playing Dead Island right now, which made my cpu get to 206F, and the temps are staying in the 160's. So much better. I think I may still invest in a water cooler of some sort eventually. I came here to get suggestions because I'm trying to save my money. Moving to California from New Jersey in September, and it's quite expensive.

Thank you to everyone that offered suggestions and the like. I appreciate all of you. :) Have a good one!
