CPU died?

Hey, I have a P4 3.00C that seems to have mysteriously died on me. Everything was working all dandy until I decided to get a new DVD burner yesterday. The computer started up fine and I used it for a couple hours. Then I left it to watch some TV and when I came back there was no image on the screen. The onboard soundcard (I have a ASUS P4C800 motherboard) is constantly blaring out "System Error CPU check". I tried unplugging and taking out various hard drives, pci cards, swapping video cards, reseating the CPU, changing CPU coolers, changing power supplies. The damn things still not working. So Im thinking the CPU is dead and it maybe because of my old and outdated Antec 380 watt Truepower 1 power supply. Before it died the computer had a Geforce 7800gs, a gig of ram, 4 hdds (one 74gig raptor, one 250 gig WD, two 40 gig WD) and a CD burner drive. I guess adding the DVD burner was the 'tipping point' of the power supply and it fried my cpu. Am I wrong here? Help would be appreciated.

Take out the components and test them in another machine. Or, find a working power supply, and take out all the drives.
 
Try the PSU first. I had a antec 430, 3.2 prescott, 6800GT, 4 HDD, 1 DVD. There was not enough power, so I could not overclock. Your system is similar, but you psu is less powerful. Hopefully you just fried your psu and everything else is ok.

 
Hey, I got a new power supply (Antec Neo power 500 watt) and it still doesn't boot up. The onboard sound keeps telling me to check my cpu. I'm pretty sure its fried now. Now I gotta get a new cpu :mad:. I was planning on waiting for a bit till my computer becomes entirely obsolete before getting a new one; or at least wait till July for the new Conroes come out. I checked a few sites and they have a P4 3.0E, a P4 2.4A a 2.8A, and some Celerons. I'm also not sure if they have some this stuff in stock (it seems like canadacomputers.com doesnt update their site that often). So for a CPU that I will only use for a couple months (then probably give it to my non gaming sister) what do you guys suggest?
 
You could always get a cheap celeron to tide you over until conroe, so you wont be spending tons of money before your major upgrade.
