CPU Coolers needed?

Hi there,



I'm in the midst of building up a computer.. just saw a suggestion to get a CPU cooler.
Is the CPU cooler needed? If so, which is the best one to go with the Q6600

FYI, I'm getting:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 CPU G0 Stepping, 2.40Ghz, 2X4Mb, 1066FSB, LGA775, Quad Core. Model Number: BX80562Q6600

That model number indicates a retail Q6600, it already has a cooler. Unless you plan on overclocking, you do not need a better one. Do you plan on overclocking?
 
A CPU cooler (more commonly called a heat sink) is absolutely required! If you don't use one you will fry your CPU within a matter of seconds. As mentioned above, if you don't plan on overclocking the then stock heat sink will be more than adequate.
 
For a small price you can buy a heatsink which will perform very well on a non-overclocked and even an overclocked Q6600. The Arctic Freezer 7 Pro comes to mind as a good performance:value heatsink.

If youre not OCing the stock one is fine. Dont be tricked into thinking you "need" third party anything.
 
I suppose the only reason to get a third-party heatsink while running at stock speeds would be if you wanted to make the system as quiet as possible. It certainly wouldn't be needed for running at stock speeds, though - it wouldn't be very good if Intel bundled a heatsink that wasn't able to keep the CPU cool enough.
 
Since you don't plan on overclocking, the stock heatsink will be perfect for you! It will keep the CPU cool, and will be fairly quiet.
