CPU coolers for mITX

I'm building a computer for a friend this next weekend and snagged a Thermaltake ft03b for myself at the same time. The cases looks, four expansions slots just won me over.
I have an Asus Pz77-i deluxe mono, i7 3770k and radeon 6870.
The stock Intel cooler runs a little hot and I've had my eye on the Antec h20 920 and the Noctua nh-L12.
I've delayed upgrading my cooling because I take my computer to LANs and I'm afraid to do damage to the motherboard with heavy coolers. I also like the fact that the Noctua doesn't require a back plate.

For a sff gaming rig, inside the Silverstone ft-03 that is moved for 3-4 nights a month,
would you guys recommend the liquid or air route? If I go with the Noctua would it be advised to use a backplate even if its low-profile?
Lastly, if I chose both the Noctua, and chose to use a backplate, does anyone know of the backplate causing interference with this motherboard?
 
Noctua usually has a list of compatible boards for each heatsink on its website.
