CPU Cooler for Q6600

According to my readings, Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme is one of the best CPU cooler for Q6600.

It looks like there is no fan in the CPU cooler. Do I need to install a fan? If so, how about the Antec 120mm tri-cool fan and set it to low?
 
The Antec Tri-Cool would work. I have 3 in my case. Set on low they aren't loud at all.
I'm using one of the Scythe S-Flex SFF21F on my E6850. It's a huge heatsink. Make sure you'll be able to clear the caps on your M/B and be able to close the case side with it mounted.

I'm using a Antec P182 SE case with no problems with that monster cooling my cpu. :D
 
I am also getting the Antec P182 with the 3 Tri-cool fans.

My quesiton is when I look at a picture of the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme, I do not see any fan attached to it. Most CPU fans, even Intel stock CPU coolers, have fans attached!
 
Thermalright heatsinks never, ever come with fans. I recommend getting a nice panaflo medium to go with the ultra extreme.

Unless you're totally set on the Ultra Extreme, look into the SI-128 as well. 90% of the performance in a much smaller package.
 
Ninja Scythe FTW as it has 6 heat pipes and it never even gets warm to the touch with my OCed Opteron 165 @ 2.61GHz. If you have good air flow you don't even need the fan. Plus it only costs $40 which gives it the best price/performance ratio for cooling out there. Anyone else out there have one?

Yes (Scythe Ninja Plus Rev. B), sitting on my Q6600 right now, though as I've just built this i'm at the parananoid granny stage and i'm using the fan.

I am still up to some skullduggery about the case with regards to cable management and tweaking, so it's been on and off a few times causing me to see how the heatsink feels and it aint felt mildly lukewarm, nevermind hot, when i've touched it.

I have a Scythe Ninja Plus also on a Q6600. I used one of Scythe PWM fans on the cooler. When the system is idling the fan doesn't even run ( cpu temp 35 C). When we start to use the PC, the fan spins up to about 250 to 300 rpms. The cooler doesn't seem warm at all.
 
The Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme can run with two fans in a push/pull setup. I'm using one nice low db Scythe S-Flex SFF21F on mine.

The heatsink comes with two anti-vibration strips. Would have been nice if four had been included for a second fan.

The Antec P182 allows routing the wires though the back side for a nice clean airflow.
I mounted a Scythe S-Flex SFF21F in the upper harddrive bay as a intake blowing towards the cpu/video area.
The intake fan allows only using the lower harddrive bay, which allows up to four harddrives.

this scythe ninja is amazing..the "E" is too cold, we are waiting for the "Q"
 
I read a review of SCYTEH SCNJ-1100P CPU Cooler; not bad at all. It does come with a 120mm fan. Can the fan speed be adjusted manually or it is adjusted automatically depending on temperature ?

That is the Ninja plus. You can adjust the fan by manually adjusting the volts. What I did on my 680i system was put a PWM fan from Scythe on it and let the motherboard adjust the fan speed automatically depending on cpu temp.
 
I will be setting up my 6600 with an Enzotech Ultra-X which is not very popular but from all acounts is excellent, within a few degress if Ultra 120 extreme. It doesn't require lapping, has a good mount and comes with AS5 which makes it good value for money.
 
My tt Big Typhoon with a 96cfm YS- Tech fan seems to do a good job. It's never gotten more than lukewarm to the touch.
