Cpu Cooler For an AMD Phenom 2?

I have never used amd in my life. My friend bought it and needs help buying a cpu cooler. Any suggestions?

Does he plan on overclocking? If not, the stock cooler will be perfectly fine. If he does want to overclock, the Xigmatek HDT-S1283 and Sunbeamtech Core Contact Freezer are both very good heatsinks. Toward the higher-end, there is also the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme, as well as the Noctua NH-U12P, but those are both quite a bit more expensive than the first two while not offering drastically better performance.
 
Killer_k as a cpu cooler for sale in his thread and I have had that same cooler and it rocks.Check out his for sale thread.
 
FYI the S1283 on an AM2 socket can only be mounted with the fan facing upward.

Only the LGA1366 version of the heatsink comes with a fan, so if you get the regular version you'll definitely need to buy your own. The fan you linked to looks pretty decent, although I'm not familiar with it so I can't say anything for certain. As for securing the fan to the heatsink, the heatsink comes with a set of clips for attaching the fan. Just read the instructions and you'll be fine. You don't need any extra components or anything.
 
You could also go on ebay and pickup a stock AMD fan for less than $15.
