I am looking for a cooler for my CPU. I originally was going to with H100 water cooling but I think a old heatsink and fan would be much simpler. I am putting it in a CM storm Trooper case and a ASUS P8Z68 pro/gen3 mobo. I have been looking at the NH-D14. What you guys think?

I have one, its awsome. But will it fit? I dont know. I dont know cases well. And an H100 would be very easy to install.

How about a Noctua D-14?
The Archon is a good choice also but to be honest I love my H100 and it was extremely easy to install but this of course depends on the case. The Archon is built a bit thinner to allow extra room for RAM although it is very tall. The Noctua and Silver Arrow are also good choices.

If you are looking for something simple, install and forget it then any fan cooler will suffice. Now if you are looking for low temps, sufficient cooling for your needs (gaming, encoding, video editing, pushing your cpu further by overclocking) I also recommend the H100.
I had a Zalman 9700 on my i7 2600k stock clock, the room was heating up fast every time I fired up Star Craft 2 and playing Anime on my second screen. Hot air was spewing out of my case, I could hear the fans spin up and it sounded like a vacuum. I then switched to the Corsair H100 over the thanksgiving holiday (black friday) and everything is quiet and cooler now. Very easy to install, you just have to take out the motherboard to install the motherboard rear bracket to hold the heat sink down. Put it back together, mount the heatsink and install the radiator where your 120 was. After that connect the power then you should be ready to go!
Those are just my experience, everyone has their differences and usage. I recommend whats the best of your interest, you can't go wrong either way: fan or water cooling.

That's because the 9700 was never very good
The Noctua and Thermalright Silver Arrow are at least as good as the H100, as shown here:

A little better than the H100 at high and a lot better when it's at low. The H100 is slightly better at high on an overclocked CPU, but only marginally.
