I just ran a bunch of timedemos in Doom3. Regardless of resolution or quality settings I get virtually the same FPS.

640 x 480
HQ 24.2FPS
MQ 33.3FPS
LQ 33.8FPS

1024 x 768
HQ 17.5FPS
MQ 17.8FPS
LQ 18.0FPS

1280 x 1024
HQ 11.3FPS
MQ 12.1FPS
LQ 12.2FPS

System specs are in sig. Would moving to an Athlon64 3000+ish system improve my performance? Or do I have to make the extremely expensive plunge and upgrade my video card?

you get the same type of results {NG}Fidel? I see you have a 3200+ barton with the x800. j/w

yeah i can hit higher fps than that (not by much) with my A64 3400+ and my shitty little 5200

something else is wrong.
do u have aa and af enabled?
proper agp gart driver?

Doesnt Doom3 overwrite any AA and AF settings you have? I thought so but will test with them both disabled. I think they are both set to max in the control panel.

lol..this is not cpu bound at all...I mean come on...you should be pulling at least 30fps with a 9800pro @ 1024x768......on high quality..

Ok I was wrong about D3 not being affected by control panel settings.

With aa/af set for application preference:
640x480 54fps
1024x768 44fps
1280x1024 30fps

Quality settings had the same FPS for low, medium and high.

I would think that as I went up in quality settings I would see a dramatic drop in fps.

In general, Doom3 is very CPU-limited anyway.
And yes, an Athlon64 would probably make a difference, mainly because its memory subsystem is much faster than the old Athlon XP.
Then again, it won't make too much of a difference, since your 9800 is not the fastest card in the world, and Doom3's stencil shadows can eat up a lot of fillrate.
You'd have to check some benchmarks online and see if you can find anything with a 9800 and a really fast CPU, then you know exactly what to expect.
This should be a good place to start: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2146&p=3
