Ok, so my son had been using my pc to play Fortnite because he says his pc "lags" too much. My build- i5 4690k, GTX 960 gpu, 8gb RAM. His build-AMD Phenom x4 960T, Radeon 6850 gpu, 8gb RAM. I finally got a good deal on a 580 gpu and swapped it into my rig and put my GTX 960 into his hoping that would fix his glitching. He is still having the same problem playing Fortnite but again, it runs perfectly on mine. Is the Phenom cpu what might be causing the problem? I have tested internet speeds on both rigs and have no problems there on either. Any suggestions??

Quite possibly, I know from my own experience of going from a Phenom x4 965 to a Ryzen 1600 it felt like I'd had a video card upgrade as well even though I've kept the same 280x as before.

Given the card a new lease of life it has.

Online multiplayer games are much more dependant on the cpu then singleplayer games. Time for a new cpu, motherboard and ram.

Any suggestions on a cpu? I was thinking an i5 also but is that overkill? Could I get away with going to a newer AMD cpu? Fortnite is the primary use. Also plays a "game" called Rocksmith but I'm guessing that is more dependent on the gpu.

Bang for buck. Ebay Dell Precision T1650 with an Xeon E3 1240 V2 ( basically an I7 3770 ) new 500W ATX power supply if graphics card needs 6/9 pin, make sure it has 8gb of Ram with 16 being optimal. Cost about $150 on itself, you'll have less than $200 into it most likely.

Absolutely, and I forgot to mention the massive improvement in multiplayer.
I used to only play on 32 player servers in bf1 because the poor old phenom couldn't cope, GTA was also painful at times.

I went to a Ryzen 1600 on a Gaming Pro Carbon B350 and 16gb of 3200 ram and I would advise something along those lines, particularly as DDR 4 is relatively cheap at the moment. I intend to drop in Zen 2 at some point which should just require a bios update.

Maybe a 2600x would suit you?

Honestly, I would rather just buy a cpu/mobo combo since I'm satisfied with every other aspect of his rig. Or are you recommending purchasing that Dell and gutting it?

No, the T1650 is sort of an underdog. $150 can get you an E3 1240 V2 ( I7 3770 ) 8gb of Ram and usually a 500gb hard drive. It's a lot of power ( almost equal to what you have ).. It's sister computer, the Optiplex 7010 is also a decent computer..

If you were going to build something, build a nice Ryzen system for yourself and kick him your old computer.

I'm assuming the resolution is 1080p? I just looked at a couple of you tube benchmarks for fortnite. The i3-8100 does surprisingly well at 1080p beating (just) AMD's 2700X. The i3 8350k does better but is a bit expensive, the i5 8400 also does well.

I guess it comes down to budget. The i3 8100 would be the best bang for buck for this game. The i5 8400 would also be a good choice. The 2600X while not the strongest in fortnite would be a good choice for other games or for playing fortnite and streaming it would be great.

Question about the T1650. Would I be able to fit my GTX 960 card in this?

As long as it's not an extra long card it will fit. You could use a riser cable and drop it down one or 2 slots if it is.

It seems like a pretty good deal. I found one on ebay for $170 shipping included. It appears to be an E3 1240 v3 @ 3.4Ghz.

May be a waste but can the board you have the Phenom x4 960T in support a fx cpu like the 8320e? If so there is quite a bit of boost you can get just swapping out the processor, for like $60... however it is not going to hold up to a 1240 xeon.

I just saw your response- been busy with the holiday! Anyway, I just looked and yes, it's an AM3+ socket so it would work. Looking at the Fx series, there is an 8350 Black edition that is $50 cheaper than the 8320e you mentioned. Would the 8350 suffice??

I think the olny real difference in the 8320e(95w) vs 8350(125w) is the TDP rating on the cpu, otherwise pretty much same chips with varying clocks of course.

should do

I'd say a Ryzen 5 2600 would be the best choice, since it already comes with a cooler and 6c/12t is a much better deal than the 4c/4t 8100.
