CPU Bottleneck?

I believe my cpu is bottlenecking my gpu, i've got a q6600 and a 5770

am i going to see any real performance gains by getting a better 775 cpu?
if so what are my best choices?

my mobo is a MSI p35 platinum

Have you tried overclocking the Q6600? The 5770 seems like kind of a weak card to be getting CPU bottlenecked - what resolution are you running?

if you have dual monitors, on the 2nd screen open up task manager / coretemp (for load values) and amd overdrive.
monitor the load on the cpu and gpu while playing game on primary monitor. the one showing the highest load is your weak point.

You would get better performance with a 2600k and 3 580s lol jk :)

If anything, you're GPU bottlenecked. The 5770 is a good card but will be close to its limit at high settings at 1920x1080. If you could get something closer to a 6870 and overclock your Q6600 a little and you'd be set.

AMD overdrive is reporting about 70% consistently on the GPU and the cpu is reporting

core #0: 64%
core #1: 70%
core #2: 57%
core #3: 92%

*cpu utilization is coming from core temp, not sure how accurate that is*

i'm not sure if this has any relevance, but it seems like i get about the same framerate with everything turned to low at that resolution.

although it might be what i'm using to bench it also, i'm playing l4d2 because it's what i've noticed the largest framerate issue with.

I don't think a Q6600 is much of a bottleneck on a 5770 at 1920x1080.

What game are you having performance issue with?

you should be able to oc to 3-3.2 without much effort. If you want to make sure that's the problem before wasting your time you can set your cpu back to stock and see if you take a huge fps hit. If you do you're cpu bottle necked if not.. well you're not lol

i say it is. i just came from a q6600 at 3.2 to my system in sig. fps in all games has gone up and my 4870 is about equal to your 5770. i5 2500 p67 8gb was the best $470 ive spent in a long time.

Seems odd since people with 1156/1366 would show a GPU bottleneck, so unless a 2500k is magical, I'm not sure why people think they can do things not really possible with them. Maybe your system was messed up before.

All you have to do is look at older i3/5/7 benchmarks/threads, and add a few frames to get Sandy Bridge numbers.

A 5770/4870 is NOT a good match with a processor of that caliber at 1080p with current games. I don't care how much you say Sandy bridge changed your view on life, you will not see much improvement unless you play a lot of console ports that do not rely on the GPU at all.

A Q6600 matches up well with that range of cards.

the source engine is very cpu dependent. i saw a nice fps boost in tf2 when i upgraded.
