cpu bottleneck for a 4870?

Current setup is a E4500 @ 3.5 with a 8800GTS G92 512mb.

I am thinking about stepping up to a 4870 so I am wondering how much of a bottleneck my E4500 will be.

I could put in an E8500 and OC to around 3.8-4.0. The main difference between the cpu's is the L2 cache (2mb vs 6mb). So I know the E8500 would be faster, but how much faster? I know that most games are highly gpu bound so I might be better off spending the $159 on a faster gpu instead.

Any thoughts?

i believe the magic number is 3ghz, you're well past that so you should be fine.

The mobo is a Gigabyte P35-DS3

The ram is 2 GB of Crucial Ballistix BL2KIT12864AA804 R

I am considering another 2 GB as well.

Your CPU won't be a bottleneck, don't worry about it. You don't need the extra RAM either if you have XP. If you have Vista, get it for sure.

the additional ram would help but not that much, and only if you got a 2 x 2gig kit and not 4 x 1gig sticks.

I am still running xp. I am thinking about getting vista though.

I have already played Crysis with the hack. The only other game I know of that supposedly had significant DX10 effects is FC2 which I will want to play. But after looking at the DX9/DX10 comparison screenshots it does not seem that significant. Maybe it is more apparent in motion.

I will definitely upgrade to vista next year when I overhaul my system to a core i7. But, should I do vista now or later? Any other games that have a big improvement?

Oh, and also what version should I get?

Wait for Windows 7 imo, but if you end up getting vista, get the 64 bit version, 32 bit is fail

Ended up getting the 4870 1GB, 2GBx2 Ram, and Vista 64. I will get windows 7 when it comes out, but I just can't stand thinking that I am missing out on DX10 even if it is overrated so had to do vista now. I will hold off on the cpu as suggested until next year when I switch to a core i7 setup and oc the bejeezus out of it. Thanks for the tips.

I got the 4870 (1GB) for xmas, and my computer that I'm supposed to put it in is at college (which has an E8500 OCed to 4.3 GHz). Since I just couldnt wait to sample the card's power, I stuck it in an old computer here at home with an Opteron 175 (2.2 GHz, I believe?). Pretty big bottle neck there, haha.

Yeah, that is what I read about a year ago and I built my system with that in mind. So you think it is still around 3 ghz?

well it was 3ghz for the longest time, I am sure it is moved up a bit but it couldn't have moved up more than 600mhz in 1 year, I could be VERY wrong though. Technology is a funny thing.
