I have an EVGA 790i FTW digital with 8 GB of DDR3, and a Q9650 that is running very nicely at 4.2 GHz.

I was wondering if the system is fast enough to go with a pair of the new GTX 580's in SLI?

My water cooled system has been running for a few years beautifully without any problems, and I don't want to break it down unnecessarily.

Most likely will cause bottleneck especially SLI GTX580, my Q9650 @4.0ghz just enough for a single gtx260. Read this thread.

Thanks prtuc2, great forum thread.

Looks like I won't be getting GTX580's until I build an I7 platform for them. :(

Well guess I will be waiting for a good EVGA Sandy Bridge board... ;)

I don't spend a lot of time bench marking and such, but now I'm wondering if my two GTX285's in SLI are too much for my Q9650 at 4Ghz?

What would be a quick and easy way to look into that?

On second thought, I may just wait for "Ivy Bridge."

If you already read that thread an easy way to determine if your cpu is up to the task, just download MSI afterburner and monitor the GPU1 and GPU2 usage when you are running the games. Anything below 95% on the gpu max usage meant the cpu isn't up to the task.

With Left 4 Dead 2 running at 2560x1600 with all setting at max, MSI afterburner says both GTX285s are 98% utilized. I guess I'm balanced as per CPU/GPU etc... think I'll leave things well enough alone. ;)
