Hey so if my motherboard bios isn't up to date and i install a new cpu (for example: a z170 board (not updated bios) with a 7700k) will the motherboard lights light up? I'm not sure what's happening rn. I bought a x99 deluxe because my x99 pro gaming i7 is on rma. The motherboard lights don't light up but I'm not sure if the bios is up to date or not. Or is my cpu bork? I don't have another cpu to test

The build:

6800k

msi gtx 1080 gaming z

4x8 3200mhz g skill trident z

evga g1 750w and evga p2 850w.

I think I smelled some smoke before with my asrock board, how do I tell if something's dead?
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

...it sounds to me like you're unsure if your current motherboard supports the CPU that you're trying to use...?

if so, I'd suggest going back to step 1 - and confirm which CPUs your current board does support and what BIOS updates (if any) are required for the CPU in question.
You don't list a specific motherboard - you mention it's an "x99 deluxe" board - which is a chipset, not a specific board.
Confirm which exact motherboard you have (i.e. the exact model) and check the manufacturer's information re: CPU support, then progress from there.

Trying to second guess things, without having the relevant information is not recommended - in my opinion.
....good luck.

If you've burnt a component out on a motherboard - some times you can tell through discolouration of the component that has been cooked. but there's no guarantee that there will be any visible sign of damage.

Do you have the motherboard manual for your board?
...if so, I'd suggest working through the troubleshooting information in that to help diagnose the fault...

x99 deluxe is a specific board. it's from asus
I don't know which bios version it's on because it's not posting.
x99 deluxe supports broadwell-e
I've tried clearing cmos.

Sorry my mistake - I clearly didn't read that properly
The MB manual is here if you need it: http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/LGA2011/X99-DELUXE/E9504_X99-DELUXE_UG_WEB.pdf

Original CPU support list is here: http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-ASUS/X99-DELUXE.html#cs

BIOS updates here: https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/X99DELUXE/HelpDesk_Download/

I note this comment re: BIOS updates from above page - date: 2016/05/12
X99-DELUXE BIOS 3101
Support the latest Intel® Core™ i7 X-Series processors.
Improve system stability.

...and given the release date for the 6800K from here:
https://ark.intel.com/products/94189/Intel-Core-i7-6800K-Processor-15M-Cache-up-to-3_60-GHz

I think you need to ensure your motherboard's BIOS is at LEAST version 3101 - or I think you're wasting your time....
I hope that helps.
If you can't post, you may need to take the board into a store to get them to assist with a bios update...
