CPU and GPU folding don't get along??

Quote: Client looks like it is using lots of CPU time: Graphics drivers must poll the GPU to see if it is done. This will look like a lot of CPU time being used, but nothing is really being done, so one can run other relatively CPU heavy code at the same time. However, we do not recommend running multiple FAH clients, as this can significantly slow down the GPU client.

Does this mean that i should uninstall my regular folding client?

Also, will the folding GPU client run in 2d or 3d mode??? If it runs in 2d, then i will need to disable 3d mode and overclock the 2d setting.

with a DC cpu, I guess you could do 1 GPU + 1 CPU client?

From what they were saying, i got the impression that running the CPU client in the background slows the GPU client down too much. Am i misunderstanding their statement?

I think you read it wrong.

Check out the threads here concerning what Mike Houston had to see.

From what I read... you could run a dual core CPU with two instances of F@H, plus one more on the ATI video card for a total of three. That is how the guys at stanford designed it.

But one thing doesn't makes me happy - it'll not use idle cycle of the video card for instance if I want to play games, I got to pause this and then play it and then start it back when I'm all done, I'm not liking that a bit...

ATi hasn;t come out with 6.10 yet or have I been looking at the wrong place?

Well, i will test it out when i get home and see if it causes any problems. We should know for sure what the best method is once people have a chance to play with everything.

Anyone know if the GPU client puts the card into 3D mode, or runs it in 2D mode for heat reduction purposes?

Someone set the CPU load to 95% in the CPU version console and that seemed to work....hmmm....just food for thought.

From what I have seen you have to have to force it into 3D.

I will say this.... if I run R@H my GPU temps drop a ton, so it looks like the GPU wont do much without using the CPU at the same time.

Polling FTL. There has got to be a way for the video card to cause an interrupt. My guess is the next version of the client will use a *lot* less cpu.

hm....should have upped the temperature of the GPU by giving it more CPU time.

I have F@H 5.05 running with ATI 6.10 CATALYST drivers and they are running in 2D mode.

Temperatures on my X1950XTX have increased a good bit as the GPU is loaded down.

Mangler are you also running a CPU instance? (Dual core system, 2xCPU instance?)

I would like to all X1x00 series cards supported. I would love to fold on my X1600Pro and I'm not willing to buy another video card at this time just to fold. I truly hope they can expand the client.

doesn't this give GPU folding comps a good chance to support our brethren with UD? although it'd be nice to CPU fold at the same time as well.

so you get to choose betweeb CPU and GPU since you cant really one both, (or all 3 on dual core) and since you get about the same PPD with less watts on cpu....or if you got an overclocked conroe i think you get more PPD...

am i understanding this wrong is or this a real bust points wise?

No. You can run GPU with CPU. They compete a bit because of keeping the GPU fed. It just takes some tweaking to make sure their is some CPU left for the GPU client.

the client has been our for 3 hours now.... I think it's little too early to have >>>ANY<<< conclusions yet.

3 hours x 100 000 clients = 300 000 hours = 12 500 days ~= 34 years.

This client is WAYYY old already :D

it's taking up a whole core and my gpu to run it. running another 5.02 console puts me at 98-100% cpu usage.

Supposedly it says it is taking up a big portion of the CPU, but supposedly it isn't actually doing that much so I'm not certain it is affecting your system the way it says it is. I really want to get specific data on how it is affecting the overall system (how much is it slowing down CPU cores, what is the affect on GPU cores with running CPU.

alright im gonna start the other 5.02 console at 80% and see if my gpu rate slows down. it's currently doing "1" every 6minutes.

See if you can get the affect on the CPU also. We are going to need something along the lines of:

### Notional Data ###
CPU at 100% (no GPU): 300PPD
CPU at 80% (no GPU): 250PPD
CPU at 80% (GPU): 240PPD
CPU at 100% (GPU): 290PPD

GPU at 100% (no CPU): 440PPD
GPU at 100% (CPU at 100%): 200PPD
GPU at 100% (CPU at 80%): 480PPD
### Notional Data ###

Figure a GPU WU = 220 points

"Please note that, currently, only the following products in ATI’s Radeon X1900 Series and Radeon X1950 Series can run the application. We will post information about upcoming products that will support this application in the near future."

ok adding the 2nd 5.02 console at 80% definitely slowed the gpu client down, it's now 20 minutes per "1"

Curses!
Follow these easy steps to help the cure:

1. Download ATI’s Catalyst software suite (version 6.10 or higher) - currently only available as beta
2. Download the Folding@Home client application here.
3. Enter the ATI team number 51394
They're recruiting!

See what running both cores at 95% and idle does to the GPU number. Killing me to have to wait tomorrow to do my own testing.

othre teams are reposting that FAQ and editing the team number
Not shocking... We're doing the same aren't we?

I don't think [H] has done any articles/front page news of the GPU events.

maybe not [H] but come on guys... Be realistic here... we're just the same as them... We are evil but good if that does makes any sense...
