Coveted Translucent / Neon Green nVidia GeForce FX 5800 Ultra

The real question is if it can run 3D without corruption. But wow, you paid a lot for that.

So basically the guy's story of the card's history smelled of BS.

This card has finally made it back into my possession and reassembled with some Arctic 0.5mm thermalpads (that i cut way too big). Took a long time to get back because the above pictures are from it's repair shop in Russia...


Here she is fully assembled and running great without artifacts.

Essentially the backplate is quite different...


The Retail card has a "cast copy" with obvious textured surface and a notch out of it...

This is the ES, looks a lot better and completely smooth IMHO: less chintzy:

I also noted that the Slot mounting bracket to the case is different. The Retail has an extra random stand off and also one additional exhaust vent.


The other differences are the ES has hand writing on the Cap of the Die indicating "43" and also some hand writing toward the front of the card on the back.
 
Whoa, you mailed it to some guy in Russia for (presumably) a reball? How much did that cost?

It's nice to see you were able to fix the FX5800Ultra ES card and having it run without artifacts. For ES cards it's not uncommon to have issues because they may have been tested to the breaking point while in the development stages.
Depending on what ES card you're using a basis there can be a wide range of differences when compared to production cards.
Another difference between the two cards you're comparing is that the production pcb is Made in China while the ES one is most likely made closer to where nVidia had their labs in the US.

I have some early samples as well. From left to right FX5800U ES w e-tag, FX5800U ES no back plate, FX5900U ES protoype cooling & e-tag, FX5900U ES w TV-tuner, FX5950U ES with nVidia logo backplate

The one with green FlowFX having no cooling for memory at the back because nVidia engineers soldered test wires at the back for probing and it's currently having the same artifact issues as yours did. I don't plan to fix it as my other FX5800U is working just fine.

Yes I do sell and trade as I'm still an active collector. I do have sales threads on other forums as well as lists with what I'm looking for in a trade. I don't have enough posts yet to create similar threads here.

Erek, i'm the one who sold you this card on ebay. I want to clarify a few things regarding 5800 ultra. The info above is true for FX 5900ultra and does not apply to the card i sold. I apologize for miss-information.
This card was purchased during mid 2000's from Ebay with unknown history prior to that. I received card card in the plastic bag without box or accessories. It was sitting in my storage ever since.
Glad this card end up in good hands and you got it working. Awesome to see it running doom 3 which is the game this card was designed for.

i wanted to emphasize the difference in build quality of the backplate a little more accentuated
