I haven't folded in a while, most of my systems have long since retired etc. I'm lookin to get back into this, even in a small way.

I'm currently building a dual 2.8 xeon with HT rig for my fileserver, I don't see any reason not to crank up f@h on it. I've heard you can use your GPU to fold now as well, is there a PCI card that has the right stuff for this task? The board only has PCI slots, no pci-e or agp.

Is it better to fold using the gpu over a cpu?

i dont think there are any legacy pci cards that can fold.. the last one i ever remember being released was the 9550 from ATI which was almost 6 years ago..

gpu folding will get you more points but the gpu WU's are different from the CPU ones.. they do totally different projects.. so if you care about points then gpu's better.. but if you just care about helping out the project.. then cpu's are just as good..
 
There are legacy cards that will fold.
There is a 8400 and HD2400 cards that have a PCI interface.
But the minimum slot speed needed to fold at full speed is ~x2 PCI-E, 500 MB/s, which is 4x faster than the PCI slot.
So its a question would you make the deadline if you used these very low end cards in a PCI slot.

Your best bet is to just use the CPU client.
It may be possible to run the SMP client on your box, but you could be very tight for the deadlines if you did.

ahh didnt know they kept making pci cards.. thought the 9550 was the last one.. thanks for correcting me Tigerbiten..
 
Would there be a way to maybe filter for smaller proteins that the pci vid card could handle easier?

I'll keep an eye out for one of those legacy cards on the cheap, can't hurt to try right?

edit: welp, apparently the 2800dp/1m/533's i ordered are LV's and my board won't run LV's. I ordered a pair of 3066dp/512/533/1.525 to replace em.
 
Well, got it up and running, currently folding on the gormac smp deino setup.

2x 3066DP/512/533/1.525v
2gb ECC REG ddr pc2100
Xp Pro till the rest of the drives arrive.

also managed to knock one out on my dual core laptop, not to fond of folding on the laptop though.

Keep an eye on the temps on that lappy, unless you have a very good warranty.
