Ever wonder which countries had the most cybercrime? Well, wonder no more because BusinessWeek has a list of the top twenty countries, complete with bot rank, phishing website rank, malicious computer activity and more.

Symantec learned that countries with the most high-speed Internet connections rank high since constantly connected systems tend to be more attractive to cybercriminals. The top three countries in Symantec's list are the U.S., China, and Germany—all of them with high concentrations of broadband connections. The U.S. alone accounted for 23% of all malicious computer activity last year.

Keep up the good work guys.

Gotta stay sharp for the impending US vs China cyberwar.

They should break down the definition and the context they use "cybercrime" in.

Tough to judge because most of the attacks our networks receive (DoD) are from U.S. owned IP's being spoofed by Chinese owned IP's. Oh well, just block 'em.

Probably not accurate. Remember McColo? The "U.S. bulletproof hosting" company that got shut down, and then the amount of spam sent in the entire internet dropped by something near 90%? It was established by, according to this, a 19-year-old Russian student named Nikolai (who later died in a street racing-related accident). Yet, on the list, this would be labeled as a "U.S." site.

Russia should've been a lot higher on that list.

Yet, on the list, this would be labeled as a "U.S." site.

Due to the fact that the hosting facility and IP addresses behind it, were actually in the US. Thats why.

If other countries had what the US, China, or Germany has (number of internet users, connection speeds, … etc), they would be at the list, on the other hand Poland is doing a great gob for being in the list, I recently found some Polish public FTP servers keeping direct fast download links for an entire copy of the MSDN server, even in China they can’t d that…I guess.

There's also a huge problem in identifying the true origins of botnets, spammers, and other idiotic malfeasance. They were using zombies to identify trouble spots, and the US certainly has the highest concentration of moronic users to broadband in the world. "Oooh, naked pics of <celebrity name here> in a handy executable!"

They seriously need to start teaching computer security in school. How many big worms in the past decade might have been stopped by a better educated user base?

I actually thought that China would be number one, not expecting US to be first. Though the internet is so widespread and there are so much users, so its clear that the cybercrime levels would be higher in large countries and like those on the list.
