Ok so maybe this could go in this forum or a software/game forum BUT, the new steam update from valve (which seems to have blown up everyone's computer) has an added option in the advanced menu on the video tab for HDR or a bloom effect.

Basically another game that allows people to experience the new buzzword eye candy (although it ISN'T fp16), whether there are maps that support this option yet is debatable because most servers are either crashing or need to update.

Not massive news (I know it isn't a controversial rant or poll or 'leaked' specs on ATi's up and coming R5xx series) but I thought you video card enthusiast gamers out there would like to know ;)

I tried a couple of maps but can't find anything HDR'ish, so no difference. It looks like it's not available (yet) in the current maps.

And indeed problems, CSS totally crashed here.

I was looking at the sun in de_dust but since I have no experience with any HDR implementation, I'm unsure if there is an actual difference :D

The option has a side note that says HDR is only implemented on HDR maps.

Yep which = nadda at the moment.

Maybe the video stress test may also incorporate HDR? (eventually)

which update is this, one that came today? i'm not home yet and don't want open steam if it will download something to crash a bunch of crap

also, what does the update actually do to people's computers?

wow, i read the steam forums, seems that lots of people can't play at all with the new update...great job valve

You would think they release these things in test enviroments. I mean shit i've filled out that hardware survey at least 50 times.

works fine here.. no crashes nothing..... works just like before the update... but too bad there;s no HDR maps out yet :p

Some day, in the future, when HDR, graphics, and monitors are topnotch, you'll go blind from staring at the digital sun.

What's the lowest card you'd recommend HDR on?

With this new update CSS starts but never loads. I can't even play.

It locks up my whole computer as well and I have to hold the power button to restart.

The 6800 Series is the lowest that supports HDR at playable settings but it doesn't run it that well if you have AA on. 7800 series is supposed to support it just fine.

Use google and edit this post to something that is factual.

Instead of taking the time to be a dick, why don't you answer his question then if you can do it better?

and this applies to 1600x1200 and above res... and also the x800 series and up should be fine too... they ALL work :p

LOL fair enough however if you don't know what you're talking about then don't say it, this is how things like rumours start.

the update caused my initial attempts to either be a slide show or just kick me back to desktop ...5 minutes later tho ..all is peachy again in the CS world for me ...yay :)

I didnt notice any visual differences tho ..but I did notice that I was actually hitting peeps I was aiming at ....double yay!

You were? Man, that's stupid.

The update was pretty small. There's no way we got any HDR content with this one. They update the source engine to support the features DOD:S supports.

So my guess is that in the future we might get HDR in CS:S but not for now.

We just have to wait for maps that use it to come out.

they dont need to make maps especially for it. Current HL2 and CSS should be able to enable it without a problem when the engine supports it.

I thought they did, which was the reason given for not converting HL2 to HDR- it would take too long.

I'm pretty sure that upgrading the engine doesn't add new light sources and effects to current maps.............

HL2 will have HDR but only at specific points (search google for the meeting transcripts or whatever if you want). Apparantly for HL2 to have HDR throughout it would take up 5GB extra space (I didn't realise this was a ramification of HDR).
