Could Windows shutdown before HDD (seriously)?

I know it sounds like a stupid question but here me out. On all PCs that I’ve seen so far, the HDD light becomes active/static just before the PC shutdown/restart. For some reason, my PC stopped doing that.

Now, the PC shuts down while the HDD indicator is active and I can also hear the HDD’s needle.

Is this normal and have you experience similar problem?


PS: I would like to point out that my system is functionally normally and haven’t encountered any major problems such as BSOD. However, I am a little worried about it.

The way hard drives interact with the OS is when the system is powering down, the heads move away from the platters and into the parked position (that means, off the drives). You really shouldn't have anything to worry about.
 
This used to be a concern back in the Win98 days. Link

It's not an issue with more recent Windows versions.
 
I also forgot to mention, once the drives "detect" (you hit shutdown from your OS or press the power button), the heads of the drives start to move off the drive as well.

Now I wont have to think about buying a new HDD cos my VIA chip doesn't support SATA II drives.

What mobo do you have? My Asus A8N5X doesn't support SATA II either, but I have a WD 320KS drive on it and I have no problems.
 
I have K8V SE Deluxe, which has VIA VT8237 south bridge chip and it’s incompatible with SATA II HDDs.

Well, if your drive is not recognized, then you can put the jumper so it run at SATA 1 speeds. That should take care of it.
 
I have an Asus A7V600 (sad to say) which has a VIA VT8237, and is running "fine" with SATA 3.0 Gb/s drives connected (Maxtor 7V300F0 IIRC). I jumpered them to 1.5 Gb/s before even trying.

I've been using the Maxtor for 2 years if it fails, I now know it can be replaced lol
