I'm building a new system and the hard drive set up I'm looking at is:
2x Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB SATA2 7200RPM 16MB in a RAID0 array
for OS and apps
and
1x Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500GB SATA2 3GB/S 7200RPM 16MB for storage

I don't know too much about drive specifics so I'm wondering if you guys have any advice/critiques on this set up. The motherboard I'm getting is a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3.

Thanks.

I personally wouldn't use raid 0 for my main drive. I've lost all my data when my setup became corrupt.

I think your better off with a raptor or one of the faster 7200rpm drives as your primary drive and then use raid as an app drive to run games off of.

do you need a raid card to set up RAID?

Maybe, maybe not.

1. If you have a RAID card, and as long as it has the drivers for the OS you want to use, you can install the OS onto it, and boot from the RAID setup.

2. Some motherboards have onboard RAID capabilities. Consult your manual to see if yours does, and what RAID levels it supports.

3. It is also possible to create a software RAID in Windows 2000 and up, the most basic being RAID 0 on 2 or more disks; more exotic OSes like Server 2003 support software RAID 5. You cannot install and boot from an OS created like this, but you can use it for applications and other stuff once Windows loads.

If you're running Windows 2000 or later, you can right click on My Computer, select Manage, and select Disk Management. From there, you can right click on any hard drive and select its properties, format disks, create and delete partitions.
Be careful. Selecting the wrong disk and deleting its partition will cause you to lose data.
It is advisable to create a RAID on new hard drives, or a set of drives that are used, where the data on them is not important, or backed up previously. Windows cannot convert 2 or more disks to a RAID and at the same time retain the data on the drives.
