I originally posted this in the Vid Cards section, but someone suggested moving it over here, so here goes:
Hey, guys, I just switched computers from an everything-integrated 1.7 GHz IBM to my new 3500+ machine. The only parts that survived the switch were my vid card (Powercolor 9600 Pro) and mouse.
Once in Windows, however, I'm getting some strange problems with the GPU. Originally, everything was running fine, but sometime after installing the Catalysts for the card, things started to degrade. The Windows GUI functions normally, but if I try to load up anything else i.e. Firefox, AIM, etc., the card will usually turn itself off (the monitor goes black and then to standby, occassionally with a "No Signal" warning while the rest of the computer keeps running fine). I haven't verified whether the card fan also powers down, but I'd assume so.
To the touch, the card is warm, but nothing to be alarmed about. I seem to remember seeing fastwrite enabled by default in my BIOS somewhere...could that be it? Also, does anyone know the default voltage for the AGP slot? I was wondering if my mobo was "accidentally" OCing my vid card...
Here are my stats in case they're helpful. The mobo is running with all the latest drivers from ABIT's site:
AMD 3500+
ABIT AV8 running the VIA K8T800PRO chipset
1 GB Corsair PC3200XLPro @ 2-2-2-5 (had to up the voltage to 2.8 to get a stable Windows install)
460W Enermax PSU
PowerColor 9600Pro
2 X Samsung 120GB HDD's (no RAID)
Windows XP Professional w/ SP1 and all current updates (besides SP2)
Thanks!
Could the Enermax really be the problem? I find it hard to believe, especially considering that fact that all I'm running is a 9600Pro, but I thought I might as well ask. Here are the stats for it segun newegg: Stats. With 33A on the 12V I thought GPU issues wouldn't be a problem, but maybe they are...
PS: This is the old configuration, which ran on a 120W PSU with no stability issues:
Intel Pentium 1.7GHz
Some generic IBM motherboard
~760MB SDRAM (not DDR)
9600 Pro
2x Seagate 40GB 7200 RPM PATA HDD's
SoundBlaster! Value
Generic 120W PSU
