    It would have been handy to have access to this CostToDrive website when I took a road trip earlier this summer. Just select your car from the list, pick your destination and hit the button. The web app plots your route, where you’ll need to stop, how much gas prices are locally and the cost of filling up at each stop. If you car is not on the list (older than 1999) you can manually enter your car’s info.

    Hmmmm....

    Your Cost To Drive Is
    $230.22

    * Total Distance 1404
    * Driving Time 22 hrs 4 mins

    According to the site, my 1400 mile trip would take 14 gallons in my BMW and would cost $230. ...

    Sounds like mileage on the car, calculations (after getting the mileage wrong) are off (230/14 is certainly way lower than quoted mean fuel price of 3.51)...

    LOL. Need some more work, a lot actually.

    Put in my trip to Florida this year, 898 miles. It says my car gets 24 mpg which is pretty conservative. The website does get the total gallons wrong, but it succeeds in calculating $132.27 for the trip, which sounds reasonable given that is a 3 tank trip (two fill ups on the way). I think I got 28 mpg on the trip, still bad considering I should be hitting 30.

    Cost To Drive: $7.49
    Total Distance: 49 miles
    Driving Time: 1 hr 4 min

    From: Porter Co. Indiana
    To: 55 E Jackson Blvd, Chicago Illinois

    Using my 1999 Ford Taurus with a 16 gallon tank and 3.0L engine.

    Sounds about right, but I'm still taking the train to work every day. It's a buck cheaper each way plus wear and tear on my car and $13 a day for 8 hour parking. Yay for South Shore railroad :D

    Mine either. My car's actually 1998, but I'm sure 1999 isn't much different.

    How long is it suppose to take to calculate? I've had it going for five minutes now. It had absolutly no trouble in planning my route (I made it easy, from my home to my job) and getting the distance, but it's looking like it can't calculate cost if you manually input your vehicle options.... My 1995 Escort's not on the list so I had to set it for 26MPG and a 14 gallon tank.

    Kinda lame. It might become better but right now, it's... meh :rolleyes:

    calculating didn't take long for me.. about 15 seconds.

    It was the menu refresh that was taking too long. I'll select 1999, but the make won't let me select for about 15 seconds.. then I'll select Ford and have to wait a bit

    When I selected a trip to texas it was almost instant, but when I selected a destination 25 miles away, it took forever.

    You live right next door to me. County wise, that is.

    Calculations definitely seem off at this site. I'm sure it will be handy once they correct them though.

    Good potential, but it's going to need an engine size selection to be very accurate.

    my truck gets about 10-13mpg (10mpg doing 65mph, 13mpg doing 55mph). To be honest, I really do not want to know in advance what my cost to drive somewhere will be. I just think happy thoughts as I fill up my 40 gallon tanks with diesel.

    The cost-to-drive caclulator doesnt factor in idling time in stop-and-go traffic, and its lack of option for diesel fuel (important when many fueling stations only sell gasoline), but that aside... its a quick way to compare something tangible when you are looking at cars.

    Calculations and estimates are just wrong.
