Corsair VX550W longevity?

I'm a noobie builder, just trying to pick out quality components that will last a long time, but not cost an arm and a leg (not always an easy feat it seems). I first got the antec True Power Trio 550W, but everyone said that they usually die within a year. Now I have my eye on the corsair VX550W. I know it makes its power, but will it last for a long time, and will it run this setup:

Q6600, or equivalent Quad @ 3.2
4x1GB RAM @ 2.1V
2x SATA DVD-RW's
2X or 3X SATA 500GB HD's
8800GT or GTS

Well if you go by the warranty as a guide, it will last at least 5 years.

If that was in indicator, the antec would last just as long, but people were telling me it had bad capacitors.
 
Ask the question a different way......utility.
How "long" will I be able to use this PSU in a meaningful way?
Can it stay while other components are upgraded?
Will I have enough power for the future?
I'd get 750W if building today for gaming. If I was building a computer for my mother, 500 would be fine.
Remember, most PSUs run at about 80% efficiency. 500 x .8 = 400.:D

Corsair specifically chose components designed for longevity. All capacitors in our PSUs are Japanese-made 105C-rated capacitors. This adds additional lifespan over a typical unit with no-name Chinese or Taiwanese capacitors rated at 85C. Not that there aren't good Chinese and Taiwanese capacitors - far from it - but the Japanese capacitors seem to have a higher average quality level so we use them specifically.

Suffice to say, the thing that would fail first in any Corsair PSU is the fan, which is the only moving part, and even that has a longer lifespan than typical fans.

I wouldn't worry too much about the longevity of any of our units. If you ever have any problems you can always contact me as well.
 
I agree completely.
You don't have to worry about Corsair stuff lasting a long time.
I have used Corsair memory exclusively and it's still going strong, also had a Nautilus 500
that was top notch.

Again I'm talking about utility......how long will a 500W PSU be useful. Corsair makes a great 750W PSU as well as a 620W.
 
No one has owned that PSU long enough to establish a track record on longevity. Thus, no one can answer your question with anything but speculation. That speculation is based on Corsair's track record and most will respond that that record is good.

It's possible to get a Corsair that will fail just as it's possible to get an Antec that is reliable. Based on limited experience (over time) that's not likely. I have a dead Antec and a reliable Corsair.

I read about the Japanese capacitors, that's good to hear because I think that the thing that went wrong with most antecs was the capacitors.


Thanks to everyone else as well, can't turn down this PSU for $50, hopefully it can handle the previously mentioned setup!
 
$50.00 for a Corsair, who cares how long it lasts. You will spend more money in a week on crap you don't really need which more than justifys the Corsair purchase. I have a Corsair 520HX paid $100 for.....its just as strong as the day I got it.

That varies so much based on each individual cap and operating temp that it isn't even funny.
